Blackberry maker RIM registers BlackPad.com

BlackBerry maker RIM has registered BlackPad.com. No, I’m not making that up.

Research In Motion has recently taken over the domain name “BlackPad.com”. Now, despite what you think of the name itself, many folks are eluding to the fact that this URL could be one of many used for the rumored upcoming BlackBerry Tablet. Now while we here would like to believe that as well, the fact is Research In Motion owns over 4,000+ registered domain names already.

Phew. But so help me if this time next year we have iPad, PalmPad, and BlackPad — someone’s getting punched in the marketing department.

  2. Bla1ze says:

The .ca is still available, lol. :)

  3. Bla1ze says:

Uh, nevermind…that’s now gone as well. Not by RIM though.

  4. Traq-pro says:

Guess there won’t be a white version of this device …

    MaxiPad is next!

  6. BrianT says:

All I can say is wow! Not only does the device look hideous (IMO) but the name is terrible and such a copy of Apple. I can’t see this being big due to the operating system but I guess time will tell.

  7. tim says:

@BrianT…. its a not a real pic.. its a mock-up that rene made..

  8. cardfan says:

    Just a dumb name.

And this is why Apple has such an easy time. The competition has no sense.

  9. Allan says:

wouldn’t BerryPad have made more sense then BlackPad?

  10. Björn says:

@Allan, that’s what I said. Then I thought about it again; and think that the name “Berry” would make more sense. It’s simpler and more attractive.

RIM will be targeting a market that will potentially carry two devices. One device will be a phone and primary communication and messaging tool and the tablet will be a companion device for media an entertainment. If you can share the connection from the phone to tablet I think it would be a huge win for RIM.

@dexter way to use an old joke. Get new material.

This is not going to end well..

  14. Dexter says:

    @andy

Way to be puerile, grow up! ;)

I wonder if they’ll sacrifice the keyboard al la Storm, or somehow try to squeeze one underneath the screen like the new phone they are about to debut. Either way, I’d be wary of this device considering RIMs track record with touch screens, and new types of devices in general.

  16. Rodney says:

Blackberry the “new” iPhone killer? Are you kidding me? You are to stupid to make fun of.

  17. Sam says:

Rim is a dying breed they are desperate now apple is much better

  18. BlackPad says:

As you wrote, the domain was registered in 2002. There wasn’t a trademark on the term “BlackPad” then and there still isn’t one today. If there had been, RIM would have surely taken the domain for free through a UDRP filing and your use of the term “squatted” would be totally acceptable. However, as we know this current situation is nothing like the hypothetical presented above, you should probably amend the “squatted” statement to reflect a more accurate characterization.
