Apple Online Store Down! US iPad Pre-Orders Imminent! International… iWhat Now?

Apple Store Down

The US Apple Online Store is down in advance today’s US iPad pre-order kick off. It should be back up by 5:30am Pacific, 8:30am Eastern so shoppers around the country can nab themselves a magical new iPad for delivery or pick-up on April 3. We’ll post the direct link as soon as it’s live.

Now Apple Online Stores in other countries like Canada and the UK… well we’re not sure why they’re down since they’re not getting iPad pre-orders (or iPads until “late April”) so keep your eyes peeled and let us know what they come back with… if anything.

    Woot woot! I’m preordering a 16GB wifi version. I wish I had more $$$ for a 64GB but this’ll do =]

    Ok, I’m confused why this always happens when they update their website. When I’m working on changes to my office site I have a “sandbox” to play in and when I’m happy with the changes I just publish it. It’s seamless and no need to ever take the site down. So, can someone tell me why Apple has to take their site down? Is it for dramatic effect?

  4. Nick says:

    I would say so.

    @Hungwell

    At this point, I suspect it is purely a marketing exercise. Apple engineers are not incompetent; even if this was a limitation on an early iteration of their store, they could have fixed it long ago, just like every other online merchant.

    But why would you when every time your site goes down you get thousands of anticipatory articles and breathless blog postings like this? You can’t buy that kind of publicity.
