iPhone Ninja Tip: How to Change Icons on a Jailbroken iPhone via SSH

iphone_pirate_2

Ever wanted to know how to change the icons of a particularly ugly app? Well, if you’re Jailbroken and have SSH access you’re in luck! Resident theming genius, Ally (iMuggle on TiPb Forums and in the Twitter) has begun collecting her excellent tutorials into one easy to browse place. Here’s a sample:

you need to know how to do a few things in order to do this. After jailbreaking, you need to know how to SSH into your phone. If you’re not familiar with SSH, you need to get familiar with that first. *Note: Unless you feel completely comfortable doing this, I don’t recommend it. Point being, SSH’ing will give you access to ALL of your iPhone’s core files, so deleting/editing certain files could be disastrous if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you’re still reading, and you’re okay with all of this, continue on.

So, fair warning, that’s why we call these iPhone Ninja tips. They’re not for the casual user — hard core only.

If you’re interested and eager, however, give Ally’s tutorials a look and let her (and us!) know your results.

You can also change your iPhone background image this way. Very convenient to make your own custom iPhone themes.

You can do it without SSH using DiskAid(and probably other apps as well). It let’s you drag and drop files to and from the iPhone just like you’d do with any folder on your computer. Very handy!

iPhone Browser. Just like Windows Exploiter… err explorer.

while you can use DiskAid or iPhoneBrowser, they do not give you total control and manipulation power over the phone. Most of what I will be doing will require more manipulation over files than what those programs offer, so I figured it’s better to get people used to SSH’ing into the device before getting into harder tutorials.

But yes, if all you are wanting to do is swap out icons, yes you can use DiskAid or other similar programs to overwrite the current .png files. I just think SSH’ing is a more efficient way to modify and edit files.

Just use netatalk and copy files into winter board via the finder – easy as pie! You can even open icon/wallpaper etc. files in photoshop right from your phone that way -

I’m confused that it’s an iPhone ninja tip with a pirate phone. can’t Rene make a ninja pirate iPhone? or would that look too much like capt Jack sparrow?

Congrats iMuggle, I find you tutorials very well done. Now do you have a few to improve my pathetic photoshop and design skills? Also, I agree with you on SSH. If anyone has jailbroken their iPhone they surely can figure out how to SSH and its not that hard and really doesn’t take that much longer. It will surely come in handy at some point (like getting your video files from your 3G into iMovie).

Question: Why does the illustration that accompanies the story have a Pirate theme?

Pirates are criminals. Jailbreakers are not (except that according to Apple, Jailbreakers are potential Terrorists who can (and will) take down entire cellular networks with Jailbroken iPhones).

I think that the illustration accompanying this story betrays an attitude on the part of the BlogMeister that is insulting to many people.

So should we put a jail icon for jailbreaking?? Oh wait, who gives a ****… Nice tips though

thanks for the kind words. :)

yes, I’m going to put up a photoshop tutorial fairly soon. I’m going to wrangle my little brother to help me with that as he is excellent with photoshop and may be able to simplify the process even more than what i can.

to all saying it’s a pirate, i never personally would have noticed that or taken offense. that’s the pic TiPb has always used when it comes to hacking/jailbreaking/unlocking etc. Doesn’t bother me a bit. I think it’s funny.

I set up an RSS for my blog through feedburner as well, so if you have an RSS client on your iPhone or through your computer, just subscribe to my RSS feed and you should get any updates I make right away :)
