AT&T Sees Verizon’s “Map for That”, Raises Lawsuit

Verizon’s “Map for That” ad was witty and kicked AT&T right where it hurt most — right in the network. AT&T, naturally, didn’t find it so amusing and has now decided to take Verizon to court. Engadget has been covering (and updating the coverage) today, and here’s where it stands:

  • AT&T complained that the original ad was misleading, saying customers could still use iPhones outside of 3G coverage (on EDGE).
  • Verizon has apparently already changed the ad once, adding some small print to disclaim the above.
  • AT&T still isn’t happy, thinks Verizon is confusing customers, and thus is sicking the lawyers on them.

What do you think? Were you confused, or were you too busy laughing (or crying, if you live in SF or NYC).

i have an iphone ans i loved it causs its true

  2. Clay C Says:

Get over yourself AT&T. Maybe this will encourage them to beef up their 3G network :D

  3. Joe McG Says:

The ad clearly states that it’s 3g coverage. AT&T got burned and now wants to cry about it. Shame on them.

  4. Neal D Says:

AT&T’s coverage isn’t as bad as the commercial shows, but it still was pretty funny. All I have to say is, even though AT&T’s coverage may be worse, who has the iPhone again?

  5. Havokid Says:

lol, if I ever need a company that focuses on “maps” and not apps, I think I’ll give Verizon a call.

  6. Omari James Says:

3G coverage in Lower New York is excellent. AT&T is just mad of course but Verizon did take it really far and deep. It’s only recently I’ve seen cell phone companies attack each other directly. Verizon brought a lot of other CDMA companies over the years so all those towers companies, smh.

  7. Pretty Funny Says:

    I think its pretty funny

  8. Chris Grayson Says:

I have an iPhone and I must say, it does reflect my experience. Love the iPhone. Hate AT&T.

  9. Dave Says:

So if ATT wins the lawsuit will they use the money to beef up their 3G network??? I’m cool with it then. ;)

  10. thively Says:

The iPhone works on EDGE? Pffft! No it doesn’t! I can barely get mail pushed to the phone. Forget actually using EDGE for anything. All you ever get is time-outs on your network connection. Not one ounce of exaggeration, EDGE is simply useless these days.

The commercial isn’t confusing at all. It’s about 3G coverage. It says nothing about 2G that I’m aware of.

  11. Alex Says:

AT&T’s iPhone coverage is bad? How about Verizon’s iPhone coverage? :)

  12. kure dood Says:

I turn off 3g most time anyway to make sure I can make it thru the day!

  13. Idc219 Says:

I agree I am in metro Atlanta and my Att coverage is fine until I hit the country. I think Att should d a commercial about verizon and show the fact they can not do voice and data applications at the same time. I think that is the biggest weakness and probaly the reason why they would never get the iPhone.

I like Att I don’t see why people get on them. To have these many iPhones on a network I think they are doing a great job.

  14. icebike Says:

AT&T does not win this fight. The best they can do is stop suing and calling attention to the fact that their 3G coverage is so limited.

People who discount Droid as a competitive device overlook the sheer difference in 3G availability that these maps make clear.

Once Verizon makes it clear they are talking about 3G, I think AT&T has no case.

  15. klmsu19 Says:

Coverage is great and all. But it really doesnt matter to the majority of the popoulation who stay in their home areas, go to work, home, the store etc.

People are brainwashed into this map mentality that a bigger map means their carrier is “better.” Its only better if you go to those places! Otherwise its just a fictitious statistic!

Does anyone REALLY care how much 3g coverage there is in the farmland middle of the US? .05% of the population? They have the major areas covered with 3G thats what really matters. You cant appease everyone all the time.

  16. Georgie de curioso Says:

    Utter nonsense.

  17. THEaquino Says:

I live in the country just outside 3G coverge so I’m on edge most of the time. It’s fine by me. My emails get pushed well, my call quality is great and Safari times out maybe once every other day. I’m more than happy with that considering how far out of town I live. My neighbor switched from verizon to AT&T because he got no service at all.

  18. Stan The Man Says:

So according to the Verizon map I can get 3G coverage in the middle of the Great Lakes? I hope my boat doesn’t run into one of their floating cell towers. Too funny.

  19. icebike Says:

    @thively:

“The iPhone works on EDGE? Pffft! No it doesn’t! “

Maybe in your area, but it works fine for me. I’m often in Edge-land, and can surf the web, slow but works, mail works, MAPS works even while driving 70mph down the freeway.

I bought the iPhone when Edge and Wifi was all that was available in my area.

And @lkmsu19: Only 80 percent of US population lives in cities, not 99.15% that you imply. Further, ATT is not in all cities. The overwhelmingly vast majority of cities are not even covered by ATT 3g. Look at the ATT coverage map before you make statements like that.

  20. kms Says:

The map is clearly inaccurate. Good for at&t.

  21. icebike Says:

    @Stan The Man:

Actually very few locations in the Great lakes are out of cell range. Middle of Lake Superior perhaps, but cell coverage over water is pretty good.

  22. Josel Says:

I came from Verizon on the original Blackberry Storm.

Both sucks. Prior to having the iPhone 3G, AT&T’s 3G is at least 3x faster running CISCO internet speed test app on my iPhone vs. old Storm.

Never mind the great Verizon customer service. Ask yourself, will you be talking to a rep everyday? NO. Will you be using your phone’s data service everyday? YES. So I wouldn’t exchange AT&T’s faster 3G service despite average ratings to Verizon’s extensive yet slow 1XEV Rev. A data service.

Besides, iPhone is tested on AT&T’s network. I don’t think VZW will be able to cope the speed demand of iphone users.

  23. Lolipopjones Says:

Working for Verizon, I can tell you the map is very inaccurate. WHy? Because VzW only mapped At&t’s HSPDA coverage and not their UMTS coverage.

  24. MCB Says:

Dear AT&T, stop spending time and money whining and suing people, and instead devote the time and money to building out the 3G network. Signed, AT&T iPhone customer

  25. sting7k Says:

I don’t know why anyone even cares about this ad or what they say.

  26. kms Says:

Verizon’s EVDO is not equivalent to AT&T’s 3G (HSDPA/UMTS). 3G is generally faster. At&T has also started rolling out 7.2 Mbps 3G, which is double the speed of 3G, and more than double the speed of EVDO. I’m tired of inaccurate advertising, and glad to see this lawsuit.

  27. Rudy Says:

My network is **** AT&T should spend that money on beefing up the network period. I’m tired of all these damn dropped called and they are holding me to my contract even after I did all the trouble shooting they ask. New sim card, new iPhone and the service has been down for 3weeks? No calls, no data no anything but they refuse to let go of the contract. There is seriously something wrong with that picture.

  28. Scott V Says:

AT&T is feeling a little hurt. I don’t think the ads were saying anything that wasn’t true. Isn’t it thngs like this that bring about competition to be the best? I realize AT&T may be slowly working on improvements to some metropolitan areas but I still live on the fringe of an Edge area. Why not work on getting things improved in areas that are more antiquated. That would change my mind and others I’m sure.

  29. Q. Rabb Says:

I think that if Verizon’s claim is true then let them bash, as Apple does to PC. But if it is not 100% cohesively and coherently true then SUE AWAY AT&T AND USE THE $$$$$$$ TO ENHANCE OUR NETWORK!!!

  30. DoubleDown ¡ Says:

Verizon’s “map” is for their 3g voice coverage. What does Verizon’s 3g data map look like ? Better yet what does their 3g data map (while talking on the phone, can I get an email) look like ? I’ll tell ya, it looks like nothing cause they can’t do it ?

  31. Adam Says:

Can I sue too?!?! I want to play too and get lots of money.

  32. Yobad Says:

Ok I’m on atts side here as in the comercial it doesn’t show all of atts 3g network! Where I live in eastern Indiana we have had 3g since august and it doesn’t show this on the verizon comercial! I’m sure they skimped atts map in other areas too!

  33. Formcodewizard Says:

I live in a 3g area so I love my iphone BUT when I travel I hardly ever get 3g and that map makes complete sense

  34. iDavey Says:

The funny thing is…they actually use the EXACT 3G map that is on AT&T’s site. LOL.

    @KMS

It’s all nice they started rolling it out. But the fact that it’s basically unusable just makes it even more pointless.

P.S. Please stop associating 3G with only HSPA. 3G refers to the third generation. Not a specific type. Hence why CDMA devices are now using 3G signs on their phones.

As far as my opinion goes…AT&T is just whining. Verizon used accurate maps. They stated audibly and visually that it is only speaking on 3G. They even used AT&T’s map. So i see nothing wrong or misleading. Unless you’re a complete idiot.

My personal experience with AT&T…it’s nice on their 3G…until you drive 2mins from where you were just at and it switches to EDGE and you’re stuck waiting for 3hrs to load a page. I hated it. I wonder how T-Mobile’s 3G will be when they unleash it upon Louisville. Hmm.

  35. Iairavat Says:

I’m switching to Verizon bcoz of these ads!!!

  36. Yobad Says:

@idavy… That map is close but that’s only about 75% of AT&Ts actual 3g coverage. Amd where AT&T actualy does have 3g it blows verizons away. So I’d say AT&T has enough grounds for a lawsuit.

  37. Macboy15 Says:

Wow no surprise here huh. Saw it coming when the commercial came out.

  38. dondada Says:

I wish I could sue that easily…I have an iPhone and AT&T sucks a** when it comes to their network. Last week I was on the island of Lanai (which is off the coast of Maui) and I had full 5 bar 3G coverage…WTF??? Seriously there are like 300 people living on that island and full 3G coverage and I can’t even make calls from D.C. half the time b/c the damn AT&T network keeps dropping the calls.

I wish AT&T would take the money they spend on their lawyers and actually invest in building out their towers…but that’s just me and my opinion. Obviously, I’m not the C.E.O.

  39. Macboy15 Says:

And I agree with yobad I had verizon and there 3g crawls compared to AT&T’s in my AREA anyway. And why have 3g verizon when all your phones SUCK.

  40. Macboy15 Says:

Hey verizon you mess with AT&T and apple. There’s a lawsuit for that. And your droid=fail.

  41. icebike Says:

    @IDavey #35

Please post a link the the EXACT map on AT@Ts site.

Truth is, the ATT map looks nothing like the one in the commercial.

  42. Brian Says:

i agree with some others. maybe AT&T (which I have) should worry about adding to their 3G coverage areas rather then crying that verizon is pointing it out for all to see.

what is AT&T going to do when they lose exclusivity with the iPhone? everyone will run from their crappy network!

  43. Lolipopjones Says:

I think many people do not realize that VzW’s 3G started as EVDO Rev O which was designed to face down against At&t’s EDGE network. The issue here is its much much easier to upgrade Rev O to Rev A vs At&t’s upgrade from EDGE to 3G HSPA and UMTS.

  44. Lolipopjones Says:

@Brian: If At&t’s network is so bad then why is their churn rate only .04 worse then Verizon?

  45. iDavey Says:

    @Icebike #42

There’s no way I see I can get a link (since it pops up in a separate window)

But point your browser here: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-plans/index.jsp

National map. Zoom in to just the first bar. Click on 3G coverage (you have to select it). And it is an EXACT match of what Verizon showed in their commercial

  46. arthur Says:

well the comercial is funny my brother has an iphone for a long time now 3 weeks ago he finally got 3g coverage and he was always jealous that i on sprint have like everywhere 3g. doesnt matter if i go from wisconsin where i live to minnesota or michigan chicago or cali pretty much all the way 3g and if its not in sprint it roams 3g so ya its cool and its proven any sprint has the fastest 3g in america just won again the price for it. whats cool and iphone is fine but on the wrong network period.pretty much in whole wisconsin edge coverage what the hell att :-) and look over the mad on att its not a good 3g coverage at all. and hey att lies all the time we have the most reliable and fastes 3g network ya right att maybe they should get some law suits for lying to the costumer???????

  47. arthur Says:

and well sprint has 4g so ya fastes network anyway 4g blows everything away

  48. SpiceRak2 Says:

I love that people think a company as large as AT&T only has enough money and resources to do one thing at a time…if you are suing someone, you obviously can not be doing ANYTHING else….please!

Legal is working on the suit and Tech is working on expanding coverage…although slowly…

I think the reason this bothers AT&T so much is that they know the impact of advertising, especially negative campaigns. That map, accurate or not, is the ONLY take away for anyone watching that commercial (unless you frequent TiPb). The overall message from Verizon: “We have you covered. AT&T does not.” That is as broad as it gets. AT&T needs consumers to see what they CAN do.

Sadly, a lawsuit is probably not going to accomplish this. Now everyone IS taking a deeper look and hearing about all the horror stories…another oversimplified take away that they don’t need.

  49. arthur Says:

AT%T is just so big because of the iphone otherwise it would be verizon and sprint and then maybe AT&T and i hope now AT&T finally gets better 3g coverage since they charge way to much money on there plan for ****** 3g service. and whats funny to is go with a palm pre in a AT&T store u know what u get throwing out well in verzion they r all kinda like hey show as ur phone can we play with it well AT&T throws u out jeez they r big babies :-)

  50. MapForThat Says:

Haha, it didn’t take long for Macboy15 to show up and post another ridiculous comment!

“Hey verizon you mess with AT&T and apple. There’s a lawsuit for that. And your droid=fail.”

So Apple and AT&T can rip on other companies, but oh no! Not the sacred Apple and AT&T, they are perfect in every way! Droid=Fail? Really, have you used it yet? Proud iPhone owner here and I think the phone looks pretty cool. Not only that, but Google Navigation for free is a pretty good deal. I just don’t understand iPhone users who defend it and AT&T like it’s the second coming of Christ.

  51. arthur Says:

well mapforthat iphone people r just like that they never admit anything is wrong. well not true my brother who owes a iphone says the AT&T service just sucks rather would he be with verizon or sprint i can see why.

  52. Anthony sux Says:

    @Arthur

“ets better 3g coverage since they charge way to much money on there plan for ****** 3g service. and whats funny to is go with a palm pre in a AT&T store u know what u get throwing out well in verzion they r all kinda like hey show as ur phone can we play with it well AT&T throws u out jeez they r big babies”

“well mapforthat iphone people r just like that they never admit anything is wrong. well not true my brother who owes a iphone says the AT&T service just sucks rather would he be with verizon or sprint i can see why”

    WTF????

Dude, just please shut the **** up!!! You’re taking up precious space with your incoherent ramblings…

  53. chrisr1975 Says:

GSM 3G (ATT) allows for simultaneous voice and data where as CDMA (Verizon)3G does not.

To me that ends the arguement of what service is better.

  54. frog Says:

EVDO sucks the life out of your battery at twice the rate UMTS does anyway. An iPhone on Verozon wouldn’t make it past lunchtime!

  55. nick Says:

haha ATT its sad I know but I think the map is right :( Had verizon before the Iphone, i never knew what a dropped call was in my life and than I go to ATT and called dropped :(

Its like a part of a Milli Vanilli “Oh you know its true”

  56. bugs Says:

@arthur “AT%T is just so big because of the iphone otherwise it would be verizon and sprint and then maybe AT&T “

att was the biggest cell company in terms of subscribers prior to iphone even existing.

att became #2 in subscribers to verizon which is number one due to verizon’s alltel purchase.

  57. bugs Says:

as tot he att suing verizon maybe att should take the money they will spend on the lawsuit and actually expand there network instead of legal actions build out there network.

  58. Connada123 Says:

I find it entertaining that people care about any carrier as much as people are sticking up for ATT and verizon around here. I’ve got ATT in northern VA, and I don’t have ant issues. I also travel a lot for work and very rarely have had coverage issues. My coworker has Verizon, and he seems equally pleased with his service. I don’t really think one is significantly better or worse than the other. For most people, pricing and available phones will be the big factors in picking a carrier. Of course there are some local areas that one of the carriers will lack coverage in, but these do not affect most users. If you don’t live in one of these areas, or at least travel through it frequently, why be loyal to any carrier?

  59. feesh Says:

I would only hope the judge has AT&T.

  60. bugs Says:

i find the att / vz argument funny, i carry both phones and when one drops the other follows 500 feet later, its actually amusing how both networks still 15 years later since they been digital drop calls like water to this day.

  61. Greg Says:

This is too funny and pathetic how at&t is taking it to court. Like someone else had mentioned, maybe at&t should have their own campain how you can talk AND use data on their network which you can’t on verizon. you don’t see other networks taking at&t to court for the slogan “america’s fastest 3g network”…which it is not. it’s called compitition…been around for ages so get over it! this is the problem with america…our justice system is nothing but a joke! you can sue anyone for anything these days!

  62. chrisr1975 Says:

GSM 3G (ATT) allows for simultaneous voice and data where as CDMA (Verizon)3G does not.

Who would want a smartphone who couldn’t provide this service. I would rather be on edge and have what ATT service provides then CDMA and be limted on what I can do on my 600 dollar phone.

  63. kev Says:

Some of you are too funny. Verizon isn’t claiming they’re better just that their 3G coverage is larger than AT&T. Which for all intents and purposes is true. Yes iDavey people are idiots. All or most of us here understand and know what 3G is but I’d say that a vast majority of iPhone owners don’t. They just know its good and have been made to want it. BTW those of you comparing the iPhone and the storm, it has nothing to do with the network. The browser on BBs suck. I saw a droid vs storm2 web browsing video and the droid rendered the website while the storm2 was still at 25% loading it. Its not the network its the device.

  64. rhit Says:

    @ iDavey

http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/images/coverage_Data.gif is the data map. It says “Data” not “3G.” Data includes EDGE and 3G, whereas VZ’s map strictly claims 3G.

http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/images/coverage_Voice.gif is the 3G/Mobile Broadband map. 3G is 3G; mobile broadband is EDGE. Why do you think they combined the two? Clearly because 3G alone fails to compare to VZ’s 3G coverage.

I’m not anti-AT&T; I have an iPhone. But, VZ got AT&T where it hurts. The ONLY advantage AT&T 3G has over VZ’s 3G is that with AT&T you can be on a call and be on 3G at the same time. VZ’s CDMA doesn’t let you do that; you’re either on a call or on 3G, but not both.

  65. Dev Says:

“disclaim” – as Inigo Montoya once said, I do not think it means what you think it means.

In fact, it means the exact opposite.

Verizon did not add text to deny or refute the claims in the chart, they did it to emphasize and highlight those claims.

It is understandable you always write from a pro-iPhone stance, but this misuse of the language makes the statement an absolute untruth (not lie, because I am sure you meant no ill will)

  66. msatlas Says:

I get pretty decent 3g coverage on AT&T around the outskirts of Madison, WI and this isn’t exactly a bustling metropolis.

Oh also btw, while UMTS/HSPA allows for voice & data at the same time, EDGE doesn’t. And while UMTS/HSPA can hand off to EDGE, once you drop to EDGE the call stays on EDGE. Which is to say, I do use voice & data together some times, but it’s not perfect. Better than nothing at all though.

  67. DustinAe Says:

If i were ATT i would be embarrased that Verizon could make this commercial. ATT is an easy target right now.

My confusion is that the area i live in has been “switching over” to 3g for the last 2 years. Three dates so far this year for the switchover have been delayed due to “major malfunction” according to ATT. On top of that the contact at att was trying to sell me on the microcell. “hey we dont have 3g anytime soon, but you can have it at your house!” i’ll take the wifi.

  68. fastlane Says:

As usual, another glut of off-topic comments.

The article is about whether or not a TV ad is misleading and/or confusing… not about which carrier one prefers.

    Sigh…

  69. Lolipopjones Says:

It is misleading due to most people will actually believe thats At&t’s voice coverage. Also the other reason to add Edge into the equation is simple due to Evdo Rev O (CDMA 3g) is only slightly faster then EDGE.

VzW still forces the Rev O standard so (as most VzW phones are Rev O with only the High end being Rev A)… most people will actually be browsing at speeds that compares to 2G GSM.

  70. Carlos Says:

AT&T will new map in 2010 New 4G in USA…

  71. Macboy15 Says:

@ALL TROLLS if you don’t like the iPhone beat it. If you don’t like apple beat it. If you don’t like the app store beat it. If you don’t like AT&T beat it. Find a bridge and jump.

  72. klmsu19 Says:

    @Lolopopjones

    Good points

    1. 3G on CDMA DOESNT meant 3G all the time. Rev 0 isnt Rev A. The “enhanced” EDGE isnt much slower than rev 0 EVDO. So yes, it is misleading as there are really two separate 3G speed classes on CDMA, and one isnt much better than EDGE

    2. I agree that I can see how itd be misleading. If people “dont get 3G” as some stated, how do you think theyll get the map? Theyll take it as pure coverage or pure data, not 3G per say. I can see how to the average person it could be misleading and they think they wont get ANY data outside that map.

    3. As I posted earlier here, a map is just that- a map. Who cares about the map? If it works where you go, great. If it doesnt then change carriers to one that does. People are brainwashed into this map and network concept that means nothing if you dont utilize it in those differentiated areas!!!

  73. Caballera Says:

I live on Staten Ialand and work in NYC and I have no issues with AT&T. I moved here 2 years ago from the Twin Cities (Minn/St.Paul) and had no issues there either. To me, the complaints regarding AT&T are a non issue. I do know T-Mobile users do have issues as I know 3 users at work that have issues in the places I go. I do not know anyone using Verizon wireless. I do like their FIOS though.

  74. WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Says:

AT&T should stop wasting money on lawyers and start using it on their network. morons!

btw wonder what it would cost apple if microsoft sued them for all the **** they ramble about windows on their ads for the past 15 years. we are pcs! face it!

  75. Racedog Says:

I had an iPhone but sold it. Why? terrible coverage and lousy service! I did go to Verizon. Great coverage and their EVDO works just about everwhere I go, I sure couldn’t say that for AT&T. I’m no fanboy of either one, I buy what works and that turned out to be Verizon.

This has nothing to do with iPhone, it has to do with the network and AT&T doesn’t seem to have figured that out yet.

  76. iphone app Says:

that good news for my brother :P

  77. peetee Says:

Here we go again, one company against another company. I think Verizon may have push really far this time – Hilarity and Exaggeration may not come in one piece. I hope after this bout, Verizon can still find their sense of humor.

    more source: http://bit.ly/ATandT-vs-Verizon-Theres-a-map-for-that-hoax

its good to see kids fighting over a cookie jar sometimes :D

  78. Brando Says:

I think ma bell is doing ok i mean their spending 30 billion on their wireless network in the next two years….since they have three times the capital as verizon they can afford it…but what im really looking forward is LTE aka 4G …from what i read it has a max capacity of around 350Mbps which is pretty impressive it will be years before we reach that but knowing that is the goal makes me happy. But all in all im happy with my 3gs 3g is great but it works fine on edge and i have wifi at the house so im good.

  79. fastlane Says:

The word misleading doesn’t necessarily always mean untrue. I highly doubt there are black and white specifics in the law which will prove one party is right or wrong beyond any doubt. Judges can interpret things completely differently from one another. While one might side with Verizon for clearly stating “3G”, another judge could very well side with AT&T because although the ad is accurate, the general public could be easily confused by technicalities they’re not expected to understand. It all depends on who the judge is, and who’s lawyers are more convincing.

Arguing over who should or shouldn’t prevail based on coverage maps (even if they’re accurate) is kind of pointless.

  80. Brian Says:

I have an iPhone and guess what? AT&T’s 3G network is a joke, just like the ad says. How about improve your network instead of whining like little b*****s about it, AT&T?

  81. AdamAnt Says:

I live on Strong Island NY and have 3G from one end of the Island all the way to the Greatest City in the World !! Go boyyyyyyyyyy !!!

  82. Bent24 Says:

I am sorry but I feel all marketing or at least 80% is misleading putting up bold “feel good picture, numbers all in bright bold” and simultaneous flashing .5 stick figure yellow font on a yellow background for 2 seconds and calling it legal. I’m sorry. Car ads, food ads, drug ads, now this. I just feel someone should regulate this. Not pose as a regulator, but actually do something istead of sit there and play the “yeah, our ad is misleading but who has the money or time to stop us?” there is a pizza hut commercial that advertizes a plethora of $5 Dollie menu items with 4 young men at a booth while the waitress delivers a pizza, breadsticks, pizza rolls and then the check arrives with $5 dollars as the total and the boy says ” wow, we just feasted for $5!” that is a lie it would have been at least $15 with what was delivered to the table. I am sick of advertising in general today. And I will snap back at any sales rep for companies that quote there stupid advertising gimiks without thinking about it first. It just boiled down to lack of creativity and laziness.

AT&T coverage is actually worse than their map shows. I am in the center of 3G on the website map but don’t get 3G. After a dozen calls to AT&T, one rep finally checked with their construction and found that indeed the closest AT&T 3G antenna is 10 mi away and they don’t actually have 3G in our area dispite what their map shows. I got a lot of apologies from the rep who was clearly embarressed, but I still don’t have 3G

AT&T 3G coverage, and the dropped calls, will haunt them for years. I have several friends who are getting rid of their bew BlackBerries becasue of the issues. I am a new iPhone owner and my phone is dropping calls, 3G coverage is awful. Is the iPhone a nice Smartphone? Yes. Is it on a great network? No. When will Apple finally deliver a mea culpa? Who knows. In the meantime, I guess my customers get to call me several times trying to get through to me. Oh, and what’s up with the volume on the iPhone? Awful, on earpiece and Bluetooth. The iPhone is a great gadget, but an AWFUL phone. Want a good phone? Go to Verizon and get a BB Curve (my previous unit). Great battery life, NEVER dropped a call, and always worked. Did it have the Apps that the iPhone has? No. Did it work rock solid on email, MMS and as a PHONE? The best. Apple + AT&T – an Enterprise user nightmare. Buyer beware – this is going to take AT&T and Apple some time to figure out. Sigh.

ATT 3g coverage stinks. I will shift to Verizon as soon as the iPhone is available on their network.

Ok let’s get one thing straight here….no where in att claim does it say verizon used an inaccurate map. The claim says people are being misled so the people that said verizon used an inaccurate map guess what att disagrees with u about that.

We have 5 AT&T phones in our house and have had great coverage until November 7, 2009 and then all of a sudden all we get is “service unavailable”. Wonder what’s up with that?

The iPhone is GREAT. However AT&T service sucks something horrible. I was sitting in my living room and during a conversation dropped the call twice. The Edge network constantly drops in and out of service. And I live well within a established service area. I wish I had stayed with Sprint, as bad as they were in Customer Service, they at least had 3G speeds here and I never dropped a call. AT&T needed this wake up call.

I simply don’t understand how to get ATT’s attention that their coverage sucks. There is no place to complain to ATT about their coverage, no one to ask when it will be better, and I would love to have a web site that says “ATT BLOWS” as their coverage is simply a joke. We live in Anthem AZ and their coverage is terrible.

Hello. I am a current T-Mobile costumer who is switching next week. T-Mobile is very bad and disappointing at times. The funny thing is that I am paying as much as AT&T or Verizon charges.

For what I know, Verizon is the best phone company in the USA. AT&T fails on getting the internet work done or that is what I have been told by it’s costumers. It also depends on the phone you have. Blackberry aren’t the best for internet surfing.

AT&T’s coverage in Upstate New York just plain sucks. I stick with AT&T only due to my iphone. I am buying a new Verizon (Motorola) Droid phone and a contract to use in my travels in my stay in northern NY. I will use my iphone for my winter residence in Florida. I rely on 3G data capability rather than taking my Laptop for small trips and business meetings.

  94. AnthonyM Says:

I have a BB Storm with Verizon service and all this 3G stuff is a bunch of malarkey. Web browsing with my BB really sucks and most pages time out, or I just give up waiting for response.

I inherited AT&T when they bought out cell one. My service in terms of coverage has slowly gone to **** since AT&T appeared on my statements 4 years ago. And don’t even the mention the number of times they’ve tried to screw me over with overbilling (which never was properly resolved and I decided to put in a complete data block and give being able to send text with data which I pay for in order to deal with it.). I got the iphone for my daughter 18mos ago–nice phone if you have 3g. But here in the sticks, its pointless. Dropped calls, network busy for calls but can send texts, I could on and on. Never had these problems when it was cell one. Would have been better of buying an ipod touch.

The iphone is a great product, but it is paired with an inferior network. Verizon’s commercial hit the nail on the head for AT&T users located outside a metropolitan area. I am counting the days until I can get out of at&t’s contract.
