Dev Team Releases iPhone/iPod PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X

The Dev Team has just released PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X. This release supports the 3.1.2 iPhone software for the following devices: iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.
- The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
- The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
- The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported
If you’ve Unlocked your iPhone under 3.0, and want to maintain your unlock, it’s vital to remember:
This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.
If you used some other method, including blackra1n that involved upgrading to Apple’s 3.1.2, your baseband has also been updated and there’s no unlock until (if?) someone figures it out, and the Dev Team has no time table for that.
For the full details please visit the Dev Teams blog and read carefully as TiPb is not responsible for your jailbreak outcome, good or bad.

It’s been a while since my iPhone has been jailbroken, but with the exception of a few of the Cydia/Installer apps, I just don’t see the point… Let the games begin

where’s the PC love DevTeam…we haven’t had an JB from the DevTeam for 3.1 OS yet?! but Mac always gets the JBs…C’mon DEVteam!!!

Too little too late – blackra1n for the win!
October 13th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Hmm.. only a few Cydia apps?
Lets see: GV Mobile (Google Voice) Backgrounder flashlight (one that actually turns the brightness to full) Cycorder (video recorder) Siphon (VoIP SIP client) SBSetings Rotation Inhibitor (disable screen rotation) Disable autolock Inspell (Inline Spell check in every app) VoIPover3G (lets SlingPlayer, Skype, PhoneSpeex or any other app run over 3G)
I am sure I am missing some. But these apps are all essential to me. Completely worth Jailbreaking. What is the logic in not jailbraking?

Finally! Thanks Jeremy for posting this. I can once again return to the jailbreak community of love. haha.

I never upgrade unless I can jailbreak. I cant live without my hacks on my 3G

Here’s a complete tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPhone firmware 3.1.2 using PwnageTool 3.1.4! http://retwt.me/T9ik

So if i j/b at 3.0, then was relocked after upgrading to 3.1, and hasnt been j/b since, am i good to j/b again?
October 13th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I have a 3gs with factory 3.1 and baseband 05.11. I’VE already jailbroken with Blackra1n but it’s still unlocked for other carriers. Does Pwnage tool 3.1.4 helps me with that?
October 13th, 2009 at 11:39 am
@Loup the answer is YES – I’m 95% sure. I just re-jailbroke to get from 3.0 to 3.1.2 and it took 30 minutes. Easy as pie!
October 13th, 2009 at 11:43 am
@Raphael I think you are asking if you can unlock your iPhone. The answer is no. Once you went to 3.1 on Apple’s firmware you lost it. Sorry

I have already jailbroken my 3GS with blackra1n. Is their any added benefit to restoring and unlocking with Pwnage Tool? I have no desire to unlock for use on a different carrier.

Jb with pwnage is better than blackra1n. After jb with blackra1n. It let your install cydia. If you want to access file system, no way. If you jb with pwnage , your phone is completely jb and you can do anything to file system ( iphonebrowser)
Geohotz does the job fast – not best.
Dev-team does the job best – not fast
October 13th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
@ Kenny. Thanks. Will be sure to re-jailbreak it with Pwnage when I get home from work.

@iphone4idiots: he never went to iPhone 3.1. He said specifically that it was factory 3.1, which is the same boat my friend is in.
Funny thing is he gets called an idiot because they say he didn’t read the instructions and his fault he can’t unlock because he foolishly upgraded to 3.1. I guess there are idiots out there that don’t think 3.1 is factory installed on new units. Not saying your one of them … But you did assume he “went” to 3.1.

Lol do people still jailbreak? And if so why? I must know. Because from what I read it’s not worth it to maintain. And you can get and do almost everything without it. Someone please explain??????????

@ Macboy, I have only recently jailbroken, after having done it only one the first gen iPhone back in the day. For me, its just about a few simple things, a customized UI, Tethering, SBSettings, so I quickly turn things on and off as I need them. There isn’t one main reason, just a few minor little tweaks I’d like to have.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
@macboy15: people like to customize. You can customize the theme with winterboard and even have wallpaper faded behind all the icons in the launcher. People like to run pandora and slacker radio in the background while they do other things. They like to make skype calls while running other programs and use it on 3g as well as wifi. People like to toggle 3g, wifi, rotation, and other settings with a quick finger swipe instead of drilling through menus. Some like to multiple iTunes libraries and sync between all of them. There are many more things to do with a jailbroken iPhone. There is not one single answer like someone else pointed out.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
How can I configure wifi to toggle with a swipe?
October 13th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
@ John download SBSettings in cydia. Once installed, swipe left to right on the top menu bar no matter which app your in and it will slide down.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
@macboy15: Really its for sbsetting. 3g unrestrictor, Skype over 3g. Unlimited download over 3g from apps store. I travel so that is nice for me. qTweeter, Cycorder, Qik, Winterboard. Im sure there is a lot more im forgetting but really the question is really Why Wouldnt you jailbreak?
October 13th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Sweet.. Installing SBsettings now. Thanks Pete!
October 13th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
@Christopher – what are you talking about? Loup was asking about j/b not unlocking so he is fine and I told Raphael that he couldn’t unlock. Which one do you think I told wrong??
BTW, I just put up guide with video on me upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1.2 with PwnageTool this morning. Very smooth – Dev Team is good.
October 13th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
just my opinion, but i think blackra1n is better, but this works for macs
October 13th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Hi every one ! Every time a tried to install the custom firmware i get a 16xxx error … Somebody can help ? (using mac and 3gs ) thanks
October 13th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
If I don’t care about the unlock (just jailbreak), is there an advantage to updating the baseband? I assume it fixes bugs just like the iPhone firmware itself.
So if I just install the stock 3.1.2 and then use Pwnage 3.1.4, I can still jailbreak right? I have been jailbroken since 3.0 and just keep using the Pwnage Tool to update. But with so many baseband updates, could it possibly improve signal and communication (e.g., less dropped calls)?
I don’t ever see myself not using AT&T with the phone so don’t care if I can’t ever unlock.
Thanks.

I just Jailbroke and unlocked with these new tools. Runs beautifully. Nice job Dev-Team as usual. My only question is what happened to the carrier name. I am running a 3GS on T-mobile. There is just a lonely set of bars and the infamous E icon in the upper left corner. They both seem lonely up there without the T-Mobile name. Any ideas?

Okay…total beginner jailbreaker here…so i have a few questions before i try to do this. I just want to get the google voice app. i am looking in the “about” menu on my iphone 3g. It says that I am on version 3.1 and Modem Firmware 05.11.07. since i only want to jailbreak and could care less about unlocking…will this PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X work for me?
October 13th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
@Mary – Yes. Just follow any of the many guides that are out there now. It should take about 30 minutes.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I used blackra1n and it worked like a charm. I’m not worried about ‘unlocking’ cause I’m with AT&T. I’m sure in 2 years I’ll want to upgrade my 3Gs, by then it will be as easy as unlocking a first gen. 2G iPhone. Plus I’m a PC.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
If I have a brand new 3gs that came with 3.1 factory installed can I jb and unlock it using 3.1.4 to run on tmobile?
October 13th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
just went from a 3.1.2 software to 3.1.2 software (jail broken) with a 3gs i bought when it first came out. i’m an owner of a mac book pro…. smoothest j/b program i’ve experience yet. and dev team does it again

Hi all,
I was one of them people that used to ask “Why jailbreak?” but now that i’ve done it i can’t live without it. Having 5 icons in the dock is a must for me, and apple could have done that themselves but the don’t! So… yep i must jailbreak my 3G.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:44 am
Please help I have recently notice that some of my apps are crashing on my 3Gs with the 3.1.2 and now it does want to connect with my iTunes n I haven’t used my iTunes since it was upgraded like a month ago. I think cydia have caused this n I remove the apps I downloaded n the problem still occurred.
