My battery doesn’t seem to drain as fast. I upgraded yesterday and made it ra1n….
October 12th, 2009 at 9:57 am
i never had coma mode until saturday afternoon, reset phone and thought nothing of it. But it appears it killed my ipod database and set everything as being “other” in the capacity bar. Ipod app on phone was empty but the music was still there (verified using ihonebrowser). Also got itunes 13019 error which is supposedly fixed by syncing with another blank library (under another account) then back to yours but this didnt work. End result was that i had to reload my pwned 3.1 firmware and has been fine since, im keen to upgrade to 3.1.2 as soon as the dev team can get the pwnagetool update out so i can reduce the risk of this happening again
October 12th, 2009 at 9:57 am
oh yea forgot to mention 3.1 battery wise hasnt been a problem, will see what 3.1.2 brings
October 12th, 2009 at 10:09 am
@Seolioa….Really? Didn’t notice. Do you want a treat?
October 12th, 2009 at 10:12 am
No coma since the upgrade.
I wish the wordings of the questions made sense.
Clean Install? Well it went cleanly for me.
Upgrade? It must have been an upgrade, after all the point number changed.
How about Normal install vs install as a new phone. Those are the terms used by iTunes.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:23 am
I wasn’t having these problems, but my volume lock didn’t work. Now, it seems to work 50% of the time. Thanks apple…
October 12th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Any word if Apple plans on fixing the slow/stuttered scrolling through the iPod function (especially with podcasts) on the iPhone? I was hoping that the 3.1.2 update would do it, but, alas, it did not.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Battery still drains pretty fast, I might make an appointment at the genius bar and see if I’m able to get a new one.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:36 am
The other thing not fixed is dropping your WiFi passwords on the LEAST difficulty connecting.
If standing at the edge of the range, and you get the can’t connect popup, if you hit retry even once, it will retry and if that fails it will drop your password. If you hit cancel, it will keep it.
Often it can’t connect simply because it is busy checking mail on 3G. (The iphone is really stupid that way. Can’t manage more than one IP interface).
October 12th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Never had either of these issues, but it did help my network connectivity problem. It used to be that every morning (since 3.1.1 update) I would get a pop up from when my phone lost the network from being in the elevator. Since the 3.1.2 update this has stopped and my phone maintains its network connection while in the elevator.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Battery life a little worse than 3.1 on my 3GS but maybe that’s cause I jailbroken it and I’m using backgrounder.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:43 am
@JeremyS (NTO):
Are you jail broken and have something running in the background?
I’ve not seen that, but then I don’t have that much in the ipod.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:43 am
@icebike: added the “new iphone” wording, may take a few minutes to update polls.
NB- Since iPhone 3.0, iTunes no longer gives me the option to “set up as new iPhone”. If I want to clean install, I have to manually go and move/delete the old backups. Only then am I prompted to set up as new.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:00 am
@icebike
No, I’m not jailbroken, nothing in the background and I haven’t used up all the memory on my 16G 3G, either. I’ve seen comments from others that they have the same issue, and it’s a bit better since the iTunes 9.0.1 update (probably because podcasts are in order), but still choppy when I try to scroll.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:01 am
@Draino
I’m not quit sure dude.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:10 am
No coma since the upgrade as well. Battery life still reliable as before the update.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:10 am
[Knocks on wood] Comma mode has not happened since I updated. Restored from back up. Never noticed any difference in my battery from one version to the next so can’t comment on that.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:21 am
My battery life seems better. I am not jailbroken and just moderate use.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:21 am
19th….. U geeks
October 12th, 2009 at 11:22 am
I have a 3g… Induced coma, gone. Battery life seems a little better. I’m glad the living hell of a brick phone is over. Just wish it didn’t take so long for apple to get a fix out…
October 12th, 2009 at 11:23 am
My battery seems a little better, but I still notice the battery doesn’t read correctly all the time. Sometimes I will restart my phone and it will have about 20% more battery or if I plug it into the computer it will jump up 20 or more percent. I have done it all restarts, resets, restores and restore and setting up as new phone still the problem persist.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:27 am
@JeremyS (not that one)
I’ve noticed the same thing too… definitely a jumpy scroll through the podcasts. Based on the stuttering that it does, it seems the problem has to do with the loading of the screen capture/graphic that appears for each podcast. Once they are all loaded, the scrolling seems to smooth out a bit.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:47 am
No coma since the upgrade, but I have seen the same number of (or perhaps increase in) forgetting a Wifi network setup/password. Battery life seems about the same to me.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:49 am
my battery seems better, but the most important thing: the coma-mode or random shutdown has never happened since i upgraded to 3.1.2. hopefully its gone forever.
thank you, apple.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Amazingly i have not had one problem with my iphone 3gs. Battery has been solid(i dont have 3g and i keep wifi off when i dont use it) and no coma. It has glitched on me once but a simple reset fixed it. Fewer problems than the crackberrys ive owned. I must just be lucky i guess. Maybe 3g service causes more problems.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
The upgrade definitly got rid of the “coma-mode” and I am now able to turn “Push” back on and everything seems to work great!! Still disappointed that there is still no teathering??
October 12th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
I know it doesn’t make a lot of sense, but the battery life didn’t seem to change after the 3.1.2 update, however, after making it ra1n, I’ve actually seen a significant improvement and I don’t understand it. As I said, it doesn’t make sense. It might even be impossible. But it’s true.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I haven’t had the coma mode but it has just shut off on me 3 times since the upgrade to where you hit the sleep/ wake button and get an immediate apple boot logo… I used to have to do a hard reset in order to boot from coma mode
October 12th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Oh and my battery life bl0ws 3g non j/b os 3.1.2
October 12th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
I was having the “coma” problem! Thus far seems to be fixed! Battery seems a bit better as well, although it might be my imagination
October 12th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Never had a battery life problem, but the damn podcast sorting issue is so damn annoying.
How about a fix!
October 12th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Haven’t had battery trouble with 3g since I exchanged it a month ago at the Genius Bar.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
My 3g seems snappier somehow after upgrade. Was really sluggish after 3gs intro.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
3.1.2 broke my iphone. Now none of my 3rd-party apps will start. I’m not the only one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10389175
None of the “fixes” described there in have worked for me. Grrrr.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Yes…. My wife’s 3GS is not having these coma modes anymore… Before it was three times a day…
October 12th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
No! Made it worse walla
October 12th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
wow this blog is amazing
October 12th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
@Duncan: Restore as a new phone and it will work. Then you can sync your apps back on.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
This actually did worse for my phone. 3.1 seemed to shorten my battery life a bit, but 3.1.2 seems to be doing it even more so. Yesterday my phone didn’t display the correct amount of battery (said it was about 70-80% full) and suddenly shut down. Now today it drained down to what appears to be able 25% by 2:15pm. Not cool.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
@killer I think your iPhone is fucked it must be the white version take it back bro walla
October 12th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I’m with Duncan, all my 3rd party apps didn’t respond either. First problem i ever had. SO i had to do a reset as new phone. Pain in the A$$ !
October 12th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
@Andre:
Run your battery all the way down till your phone shuts off. (Guess you already did that, but do it again). Then charge it fully.
Then make sure your email accounts are working properly, because push OR pull on an account that is not set up properly will keep the radios trying and retrying, and burning battery.
October 12th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I had read that 3.1 made 2g and 3g phones incompatiable(sp?) with Outlook thru MicroSoft Exchange. Was this true/has it been fixed in 3.1.2? I haven’t upgraded because of that.
October 12th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Never had a problem with coma mode. Have had major problems with battery life, but since the upgrade to 3.1.2 my battery is much better. Took iPhone off charger at 7:45est at 100%, now at 4:58est I’m at 87%.
October 12th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
My battery still sucks! At 7am had 100% & by noon was at 40%. My phone also developed 3 hairline cracks on the bottom as well as my Bluetooth doesn’t stay connected. apple is actually sending me a new phone so hopefully it’s better.
October 12th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
I hate people that say ‘1st”….
Battery problem is the same or worse. Nothing’s changed!
October 12th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Upgraded to 3.1.2 , items were fixed but my wifi slowed. Appox 10 seconds to load a page. Not bothered about the upgraded stuff so reverted back to 3.1 within an hour. Same pages now load within 2 seconds and I love my phone again. Anyone else?
October 12th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I experienced ‘comas’ with 3.1. Not as bad as some… removing the headphones seemed to make it happen mostly on demand… plus there were a few times where it ‘just happened’ without headphones. Anyway, I rolled back to 3.0.1 and at that time set up as a new phone… and I wanted for 3.1.2. About 2 days in (after I saw some positive results), I jumped in and can say that 3.1.2 solves these problems. Oh – I also saw the problem where it was losing connectivity with the network and calls would go to voicemail with 3.1. It did happen with 3.0.1, but the chance was much less. 3.1.2 does solve this as well.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
No coma since upgrade. I’ve never had battery issues.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
RON JEREMY’S BATTERY IS STILL RUNNING STRONG AND HARD LIKE RON JEREMY HIMSELF BACK IN MY MOVIE DAYS….
October 12th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Several times I have seen posts advising to restore as a new iPhone…this should stabilize battery life.
My question: do you sacrifice all application data when you do this? I know I can reinstall apps but, for some of them, I have running records/data that can be backed up but not reinstalled.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Batt life is terrible since 3.1.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Still having battery issues here. I know some is due to leaving WiFi on throughout the day, but this issue was not apperent prior to 3.0 upgrade.
October 13th, 2009 at 2:20 am
Iphone 3g here. Updated and clean install. No coma mode anymore and battery life has increased at lest 20%
October 13th, 2009 at 2:52 am
I was having connection issues where I would suddenly lose service without knowing. I would have 5 bars and a 3g icons, but wouldn’t be able to send or recieve texts/calls until I reset. This seems to fix that and my battery life seems a little better. I got home with 25% battery instead of 4%
October 13th, 2009 at 2:54 am
I have a new 3GS 3.1 officially unlocked out of the box , and i had the “Coma” all the time , update to 3.1.2 with clean install , didn’t Help at all ! gave it 2 days , played with settings , “Coma” still on .
The coma came immideatly after the phone gos to sleep mode , it was so frustrating . i decided to do a jailbreak cause i have nothing to lose and nothing is gona make matters worse ( having a dead phone ) .
My iphone now working perfect, free of coma . Thanks to jailbreak (blackra1in) , i installed an app called insomnia 3.0 . it prevent the phone from going to sleep mode after i lock it .
October 13th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Never had a “coma”, but it locked up during the upgrade installation and I had to do a restore. This is the first problem I’ve had since purchased in August. Battery seems to drain a little faster than before.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:29 am
I never had the comma mode or battery issues since 3.1 upgrade, but i did have the network issues where it would drop off w/o notice. Since 3.1.2 no network issues and a little better battery life so all is good. With mms and this newtork fix, my iphone is running strong and easily the best phone i’ve ever had. Looking forward to more updates and great apps. Get on that Backbreaker, awesome football game!!
October 13th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
coma mode finally gone since the upgrade…thank JOBS.
October 13th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
before 3.1 came out.. 3.01 was ‘zombie’ mode http://movie1.iPaperWeight.info for a video of iZombie mode.. 3.1 introduced coma and no voicemail and 10% chance of phone calls… so i put on 3.01 (very tedious to do)… then i accidentally put on 3.1 (doing research on exactly what the EULA says about the ‘your backup you just did is worthless) during a firmware upgrade); answer; NOTHING. so.. after my last coma, i bit the bullet and put on 3.1.2; got rid of coma and brought back iZombie; which is far worse than an occasional coma. If you had or have the coma or ZOMBIE bug; go check out my website and ‘fill lin the blanks’.

October 13th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
my battery started out bad, got worse with 3.1, but 3.1.2 incredibly fixed the problem. At least a 30% increase in battery life. I don’t know what was wrong, but I’m glad it’s fixed now.
October 13th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
i updated to 3.1.2 last week. just had a coma today. whaaaaaaaaaat
October 22nd, 2009 at 1:45 pm
MIKe- what does your usage shows now ? How many hours does it last on 3.2.1 , my max has been 7 hours
October 24th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Just updated to 3.1.2. and after a 2min usage and 1 and a half hr standby, my battery life went down for 90%. Crazyyy. I thought it’s gonna get better from the new software… Arrrr..
October 28th, 2009 at 12:02 am
No, 3.1.2 did not fix the coma problem. Nor the apps starting and immediately closing problem. But things are slightly better in that I can at least get the thing running again with a full two button shutdown, ten minutes rest, and a restart. Very frustrating problem, and the worst part is Apple not owning up to it.
November 1st, 2009 at 3:44 am
Well, I’m telling this to everyone. I proofed that iPhone’s battery could be last longer after you updated to 3.1.2 by the “Setup new phone”.
I was hearing music and browsing for 3 hours non-stop by using wifi, and my battery still 75% from 100%.
November 4th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
3.1.2 has killed the battery life on my iphone. i never had a problem with any aspect of my phone in the year and a half of owning it. now, it doesn’t even last two hours. i am not running wifi. i am not running bluetooth. i have no apps open. it’s literally just on standby, and it dies within 2 hours. i did a clean reinstall, and that didn’t help. i am looking online to find work arounds to go back to the previous OS because this is not acceptable.
November 4th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Well, can you than let me know how can you get back to the old OS? I would go back to the one before the older one…
November 4th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Upgraded from 3.0.x to 3.1.2 and just noticed the my iPhone 3G S battery drain to an unacceptable level even with normal usage (Location Service off, Manually grab mail, WIFI turn off).
November 30th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Hello all
Iphone 2G(8Gb)Firmware 3.0.1 Jailbroken with Cydia
I had the “COMA” bug appear after i installed bejewelled2. I tried absolutely everything to get the bugger to wake up from sleep, but to no avail.
Solution……..
I upgraded to 3.1.2 and yes, it STILL was suffering from COMA! After much fannying about, i discovered the following fix:
I now have no more COMA !!!!,
I think what did it for me was restoring as a new phone on a different computer. I am also VERY wary of jailbreaking the phone……….
December 14th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
How’s the battery life on the first generation iPhone OS 3 or 3.1.2 ? My current version is 2 , just wondering if I should upgrade it or not …
December 31st, 2009 at 10:39 am
Excuse me what is coma mode and polls mean in iPhone ?
January 1st, 2010 at 2:41 am
Recently got an iphone 2g and it has this white screen problem whereas when i put it in sleep mode it comes back with a white screen but if its plugged in to my laptop and is out in sleep mode it comes up normal without the white screen. Anyone knows what could be the problem.. i’ve tried updating to the 3.1.2 but that does nothing for the coma..
January 2nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm
GOT MINE FIXED!!! after doing many downgrades and upgrades, none of them worked. Found this website, and after using winscp changed my power management files and it worked. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=548160 << CHECK IT OUT
