AT&T iPhone MMS Arrives Today — Here’s a Walkthrough!
Today’s the day everyone on AT&T has been waiting for — MMS lands now. Well, now-ish, because AT&T is doing a rolling roll-out, and we’ll see how the network holds up.
AT&T MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25. Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time.

iPhone 3.0/3.1 MMS Walkthrough
Messages is the new SMS, and is renamed to signify the addition of MMS (multi-media messaging service). It allows, in the case of the new iPhone OS 3.0 software, for you to receive, vCards (contacts), audio, location, and — for iPhone 3GS only — video to be sent using the Messages interface to any other smartphone or feature-phone that supports MMS and those file types.
Once you receive an MMS, you can tap the icon in the message bubble to get a better look at it. In the case of a contact, you’ll see a page similar to what you get when you call up a contact in Phone, except at the very bottom you’ll have extra, saving and sharing related options that we’ll cover later in the Phone app section.
Location opens in Google Maps as you’d expect, audio and video in iPod, and images pop up full screen where you can tap the share icon to Save Image — but strangely not re-share it…
When it comes to sending MMS, only picture sending can be initiated from within the Messages app itself. Everything else starts a “share” function from another app (i.e. Share Contact is in Contacts, Share Location is in Google Maps, Share Audio is in Voice Recorder, etc.)
There are two ways to insert a picture into MMS. The first is to tap the camera icon, bottom right. A requester will ask if you want to Take Photo or Choose Existing. Take Photo will call up an embedded version of the Camera app. Frame your picture, tap the camera icon, look at the preview and either hit Retake to try again or Use to insert the picture into your MMS window. (If you want to erase it later, just backspace over it like you would a text character you want to delete)
Choose Existing will call up an image picker (like the Photo App). Pick an Album, pick a picture, and tap Choose to confirm.
The second way to insert a picture into MMS is to paste it…
The new, system-wide Cut, Copy, and Paste service has also been introduced into Messages. It works in a similar way to the implementation in the Notes app, and we’ll cover it more fully there. One difference is that double tapping a previous SMS will give you the Copy popup allowing you to duplicate the entire contents of the SMS to the clipboard. Tapping on an empty entry box will launch the Paste popup, so you can stick the contents back down in an message of your own. If the entry box already contains text, double tapping will select the closest word, and double tapping an holding will select the closet word and popup the loupe.
Again, we’ll cover this more fully in the section for the Notes app.
Messages also now includes line-item deletion and forwarding. Tap the Edit button at the top right, select the messages you want — as many of them as you want — and then hit the red Delete button at the bottom, or the blue Forward button beside it. Edit still isn’t the most elegant name for the combination of deletion and forwarding, mind you, but the functionality is consistent with the Mass Edit feature introduced for Mail in iPhone 2.0.
Lastly, Apple has also answered the call for pervasive landscape-style keyboards, and Messages is one of the text-entry apps that received it. For those who want a Cadillac-wide typing experience, enjoy!
(Note to Apple: a way to “lock” the iPhone in portrait or landscape mode would be appreciated, especially when typing while reclining and every little angle change sends the UI spinning.)
Still no MMS for AT&T users. That’s being released on September 25 (though whether it will require an iPhone 3.1.1 update, or just a new carrier file is unknown).
With iPhone 3.1 you can tap the action button at bottom, left to save them to the camera roll, just like you could previously do with pictures under iPhone 3.0.

I’ve been using MMS for a couple weeks now via the carrier file update that was posted on many blogs. It’s been working great between iphones, but I’m seeing problems sending to friends with “Lesser” phones. A friend on sprint, using a flip phone of some sort, can’t see most of the pics I send because they’re too big. Even pics take with the iPhone camera. Since there’s no way to resize your pictures on the fly (that I am aware of), I have a feeling this is going to become a major issue in the coming days/weeks. I’m not sure what the correct fix is here, but I could possibly see one or more of the following being implemented into the messaging app:
it auto sizes the image/video/sound to make it more compatible before sending.
it allows for re-size.
it looks at media size and warns against sending large items and that they may not arrive.
Ideally, other carriers would fix the problem on their end and allow larger files.
It will be interesting to sit back and watch what happens. Either way, it’s nice to have the capability. Just sucks to send a picture and get the message back… “Can’t see it!”

Just sent my first MMS using 3.0.1 and the updated carrier bundle that’s been floating around earlier this summer. Didn’t want to upgrade to 3.1 and lose the tethering!

Why is everyone so worried about this update. AT&T rarely follows through with their promises so please don’t expect today to be any different. They will probably make sure some aspect of mms doesn’t work so their fragile network won’t fold because of a picture.

j in sofla: SMS messages are data sent over the control channel of the cellular connection. It’s not quite the same thing as using your internet connection. It’s more like making a phone call, but instead of making a voice connection, you just shove some text in there.
MMS, however, is an SMS and a special link that tells the phone to download the picture over a regular data connection. Isn’t that right (someone will probably know)?

Stupid free flip phones with a 1×1 screen have such capability, why shouldn’t the iPhone during it’s debut in 2007?

I am sick of hearing about MMS. I use a thing called e-mail. I am not willing to pay more to send pictures if I can email them for free. I also don’t have the attention span of a fly where I need to check my phone every second. I just want tethering so if I need to send a letter via email I can type it up on my computer and then email it using the expensive data plan I am paying for.

Not quite. The iphone config utility is a bussiness organization tool for small bussinesses that provide iphones for their employees, but keep waiting it’ll be there sometime in the afternoon if your on the east coast.

AT&T’s plans for rolling out the service on Friday, with deployments scheduled in groups to begin at 10:00 AM Eastern time and new groups being activated on an hourly basis after that in order to slowly ramp demand and gauge service performance.

This is fairly amusing. The release says “Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday” which is still hours away and people are already getting upset because it’s not available yet. Patience is a virtue that we, as a society in general, are lacking. It’s been this long, relax for a little while longer. I use beejive for SMS and picfree for MMS. It’s a bit clunky sometimes, but (for me anyway) the mild inconvenience is more than worth the $120/yr savings.
You can bet that if/when AT&T loses exclusivity that they won’t be trying these pricing shenanigans.

There is a built in way to lock the rotation in one lean direction and that is landscape with the home key opposite the direction you will be leaning in. The iPhone does not rotate upside down (ie home button in the upward direction) so if I have the iPhone in landscape with the Home Button on the right, then I could lean to the left (i.e. laying on a recliner or the bed) and it would not auto rotate. Then if I decided to lean to the other side I would have to flip the landscape rotation which is the only disadvantage. However, I like to read my iPhone in a tilted manner while I’m laying down and this is a useful way to do it without it flipping all over the place or jailbreaking to get the auto-rotate inhibitor sbs program.

10:34 Central – Tulsa, OK and nothing at all here yet.. I’m not for sure it will work with OS 3.0 though, because I don’t have the little camera icon in the SMS app or any kind of “Send as MMS” option in the picture viewer. Maybe it will just require a carrier file and power cycle the phone – not require OS 3.1 or an iTunes update.. wishful thinking?

Sending MMS with iPhone 3.1, Carrier 5.1 file on a non-jailbroken phone in Milwaukee, WI. I was able to send and receive pics and video around 5:30 CST time last night. I did notice that messages would only go through on 3g and not on WiFi.

And I don’t have a problem emailing pics from my phone, I have a problem with people sending me pics and I have to go to viewmymessage.com. It’s also not convenient for others to always have to use your email address, and sometimes email to someone’s mms address doesn’t go through on their end.

I really hate the landscape/portrait tilt effect. it needs a ‘lock’ option to be set at the user’s desire. I’m tired of it switching between the two and it always gets stuck at landscape unless I exit the app! so annoying. maybe it shouldn’t be automatic and it requires a prompt by the user, like zooming, only a twisting motion on the screen with the finger will cause it to tilt. still waiting for my MMS

INFORMATION:
“Will there be an extra charge for mms?” No, there won’t be an extra charge. MMS is included in the iphone text messaging package you already have.
“I have picture messaging, by installing the carrier update I found on a website, but it won’t send when I’m on wi-fi.” Right, that is because it is not an official release, and has been edited. This will cause all sorts of unexpected problems. Avoid using this, as support from both apple and at&t don’t want to have to clean up your mess.
“My pictures look bad on other phones, now that I have picture messaging.” Well, remember that mms does resize images, and then the recipient phone displays them in their own resolution. This can tend to look like garbage. Here’s a trick–on the phone, bring up the photo in your Photos app, and take a screen shot of the image, framed (zoomed/zoomed out/positioned) the way you want, and take a screen shot (press the home and power button at the same time and release). This will take a smaller-sized image, and allow you to frame it the way you want it, which will help make it look better on the receiving end.

The carrier settings update is different from a phone software update, in which you’d press the check for updates button. The carrier settings update happens when the phone is connected to sync. So, you’ll want to unplug and re-plug in your phone, let it backup/sync if it’s set to auto-sync BEFORE you unplug it again.

Erie PA has it, I found a 5.1 carrier online and installed it, working fine now. Apple has not put it up for download yet tho, so AT&T has the network ready, Apple is to blame for me right now. Luckily I found it another way tho.

I just randomly plugged my phone in iTunes and clicked “check for update”. Thankfully it didn’t have to sync anything since I’m on my work cpu. It downloaded the carrier update (5.5). Restarted my phone and the icon was there. Message successfully sent.

“I got the update, but there’s no camera icon to send pictures.” After the update, make sure you restart your phone, and double-check. I would also recommend syncing once more, if it’s still not showing the option.

I think that its just the fact that ATT did not allow this functionality from the get go is just insane. A crappy Nokia phone that costs 25 dollars can take VIDEO and pictures and send them on their merry way via MMS. The sheer fact that ATT ( not allowing MMS right away ) and Apple for not making a phone that could take Video right away is just stupid bottom line. I understand Apples way of doing things is giving people little tastes a bits of things. I’m a very pleasantly happy I-phone 3g user but still get annoyed with Apples way of life sometimes. The simple fact that I have a 3g and a New Nano comes out that can take video is just flat out aggravating, its an MP3 player for Christ sake, but they are truing it into everything BUT a cellphone. Just another way yet again Apple is messing with us. Give me my deserved MMS and I will shut my mouth!!

MMS is live… southern california. You need to update to new itunes 9.0.1 then “check for updates” with iphone plugged in. It will update your carrier information. After you resync with update. Reboot your phone and you are good!!!

“When I try to send, it’s stuck on the sending bar and won’t finish.” Give it time. MMS is basically email. If your sending becomes stuck, you can thank the other goobers in your area, for constipating the server with pictures of their three-legged cat, and videos of flushing toilets.

Just got the carrier update here in Mid Ohio around 1:15 EST. Restarted phone, sent a pic to myself and it came in right away. I previously had no problem using email to send pics but you had to figure out the end users email address and then sometimes it didnt work. And to open email you usually had to be connected to wifi or it took forever. Well its now time to send out texts and have people start flooding my iPhone with pics.

ALL HACKED CARRIER USERS:
You should upgrade to the official one because it is designated 5.5, not 5.1, like your hacked version You may lose your tethering, I suppose.
To the extent ATT can tell which carrier version you are using you will now stand out like sore thumbs.

@Sam, Yes, I experience things like that usually too. Dropped calls. Late voicemail/txt msgs. But this is whole a new level of substandard functionality. I’ve had 4 different people try to call my phone, for a total of about 15-20 calls over the last hour, and my phone has not rung for a single one. But, I can call out just fine.

Definitely not losing my jailbreak to gain MMS. If you are on 3.0 or higher you should get this download…not just 3.1!!!! Can still use the 5.1 carrier settings as they work though

I just updated, and, while I should have checked my message count right before sending, after I sent a camera picture it looks like it counted as 20 SMS messages against my total. Since I am now over my cap, I am not about to try again, but is there any official word on how much different types of MMS messages will be billed?

Got the update at 1:15 Eastern time here in Central Florida. Plugged the phone in and it popped up saying there was a carrier update. Took literally like 2 seconds and it was done. Restart is needed afterward.

AT&T To enable MMS messaging, connect your iPhone to your computer and click “Check for Update” in iTunes. Once the update is completed, restart your iPhone by turning it off then on again. @Mike, @Sam, @Will – Same here. jailbroken on 3.0.1. Don’t want to upgrade to 3.1 and lose the jailbreak. I can’t check to see what I get (carrier file or not) until i get home from work.
Might try loading SwirlyMMS from Cydia, and see if that works. Before, the only reason I couldn’t use it was the AT&T block. Now that that is lifted, maybe it’ll work…

yay i just updated my carrier file and my mms is now activated. as for those who are thinking u wont have data access for most of the day and or it wont work properly your wrong… I work for AT&T and trust me they have the network beefed up that there wont be any problems.

I’m in Boston and I got the carrier update a little past 1pm. I just synced my phone and got nothing. After resyncing it a dozen times to no avail, I finally rebooted it and now it works. Finally.

Tried to download the software only and not install, that didnt work. I guess I am just going to update to 3.1 and get rid of tethering…..for now. I am sure there will be another work-around for it.
I am gonna be real pissed if the 3.1 update still doesnt give me the new carrier settings. I’ll update you in a bit when this is done loading 3.1

I am also on 3.0.1 and I want to keep my tethering functionality. I think all we really need is the ATT Carrier File 5.5 and we can do a manual carrier update much like what they were doing with the 5.0 and 5.1 carrier update to get early MMS. We just need to get one of these people to upload the 5.1 ATT carrier file

Jailbreak 3.1 is not available. And believe me its gonna be hard to jailbreak if you dont have ECID SHSH on file according to the dev team .. thats why I dont want to update to 3.1 just for mms

OK, it appears that the carrier update is only for 3.1 OS. There is a jailbreak out for that, but not for the 3G[S] yet. I just got SwirlyMMS from xsellize in Cydia, and that works fine for me (3.01 OS). So I guess that those of us with jailbroken 3.01 OS will have to use SwirlyMMS for now until an official 3.1 OS jailbreak is out.

Yeah, SwirlyMMS is working for me. All I did was send a pic to myself. It took a while though, and it’s an entirely separate app. It doesn’t integrate with your regular messaging or anything.

Click that link that Chris gave me. It tells you how to update using the new carrier file. You have to type some stuff into your command menu, then manually add the file through iTunes. You may have forgotten to change the file format when you went to open the .ipcc file.

Guys updating your carrier files , search the web for 5.2 instead of 5.5 , mms works the same and OMG it has tethering. Your phone does not have to be jailbroken either. i will never upgrade to 3.1 with all the problems.

So jailbroken 3gs 3.0.1 did the 5.5 carrier update through site provided and messaging has the camera present but when sending pics getting the red exclamation point. Any reason for this. have tried at least 7 8 different times to myself, other iphones and non at&t customers. All red exclamation points. Located in chicago. Any reason/help or word on this. Again, I am running a jailbroken phone, 3.0, and just upgraded the carrier to 5.5, and picture messaging works fine. I have sent and received pictures to/from verizon and at&t customers. I noticed that a few people were saying they were getting errors when trying to upgrade the carrier settings on a JAILBROKEN 3.0/3.01
The reason you may be getting this error (it was the reason I was getting the error at least), is that, if you have downloaded the custom AT&T carrier image off of Cydia, you need to remove it, respring your phone, then try again. You shouldn’t encounter the error after that.

It doesn’t work for the 2G!!!! That’s ****! I’ve had phones that weren’t even close to the power & design of this phone and they managed to have MMS! I’m so tired of paying more than most people would ever pay for a cell phone & getting half the service! I’m not going back to a contract; if I knew how to get my phone on the BOOST network I would! I guess if anyone knows were I can get a 3Gs in the box for around 250; give me a holla!

ifyou download the new update and you dont have the picture message option in texts, shut off you phone and restart it. it will be there.

Okay for those of you who are lucky enough to have yours working, cool. But for those who are still waiting for the messiah, I mean MMS and have been for like ever; you have to choices, either get rid of your piece of **** i Phone and get a windows based smart phone or if you just can’t live with out your I phone and you have to have the ability of sending and receiving pic messages; go to MMS.ifind2.com and download the MMS apps along with tethering and stop stressing.

Downloaded the update yesterday which went fine. However, the MMS feature has yet to actually work. FAils to send every single time.

I have a 3g JB iPhone 3.0 that I cannot manually update the carrier settings to save my life. I’ve tried for hours now and no go. Can someone please give me a easy step my step? Thank you.

wooooot! it finally works! thanks for the suggestions guys, turns out all i needed to do was reset my phone lol. it takes a minute to send them (roughly 10x longer than a regular text) but deffinately worth it. its about time AT&T gets their sht together… top of the line phone and it couldnt send pics? my buddy has a $10 phone from walmart that could do that….thanks again all and AT&T. good luck to the rest of you!

Anyone have any idea why i still cant send a picture? I did the upgrade and can place a picture in a text but my phone will not send the text through??!!?!?! And before anyone says it, yes i have picture text on my plan!

quick question – has anyone gotten this to work in Baltimore/DC? AND on a first-gen iPhone? I’m running OS3.1, I have just updated, and I have rebooted, but I don’t see the camera icon in Messages. So…any luck with the first gen iPhones?

Well i can send picture messages no problem after the update, I haven’t been able to receive one yet.
Any thoughts? I did reset my phone twice. In the Northern VA area.

FIx for not sending:::
call att have them switch you from unlimited text plan, to the iphone unlimited txt plan. Issue resolved

When i tried to instal the new mms update on my iphone 3g it didnt work. I dont know why because i fell asleep in the process of it updating. I do know that before i fell asleep it said it was backing up, it was doing that for a long time but it was still going, slowly but surley. when i woke up about 2 hours later my computer said it updated but my phone wasnt able to send mms messages, it didnt even show that it was updated. I was really looking forward to getting the update, is there stilla way that i can?

Seems like if you do not install the update to the carrier file your text messaging will stop working. Starting early this morning texting stopped for me – send and receive. Installed the update today and the backlog of texts starting coming through. This is very bad idea on AT&T behalf… even Microsoft got the backwards compatibility thing down…

I had updated my iPhone 3G to version 3.1 and also got the mms update. It was working fine. Till 2 days ago when I jailbroke my iPhone on 3.1 and now whenever it tries to send the mms it fails and asking me to try to send again. But it never sends. Has anybody faced this problem after jailbreaking iPhone 3G on 3.1 ? If so how did you fixed it ?

I just updated my iPhone and MMS is not working
I have the most resent update, I reset the carrier settings, I powered it off and on numerous times and still nothing. I have the camera icon but no pictures will go through. I tried sending different sized pictures, I tried sending to other iPhone users, AT&T users & users on other networks and nothing seems to be working. Anyone know anything else I can try doing?

ok. so like i hav the iphone 3.0 and i hav the lastest version of iTunes. i clicked under the “summary” tab in itunes and like thers supposed to be an “update” button un the “version” thing but my itunes window wont expand anymore to let me see it. what should i do? help plz?
