Apple Time Capsule Dual-Band Routers + Storage Updated to 1TB/2TB

Stealth update time in Apple-land this morning, as Time Capsule has doubled in storage to 1TB/2TB configurations ($299/$499). The dual-band routers inside the Time Capsule, identical to those in the latest Airport Extremes, support both fast 802.11n networking for modern computers, and simultaneously, 802.11g for mobile devices like the iPhone and iPod touch.

If you’ve been wanting to go dual-band and have a hankering to hunker down with a 2TB hard drive as well, Apple now has a glossy white option just for you:

Back up a lifetime’s worth of memories with the Time Capsule, a wireless hard drive that works seamlessly with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard. It’s also a full-featured 802.11n Wi-Fi base station with simultaneous dual-band support.1 Choose from 1TB and 2TB models.

Instead of hunkering I think you mean hankering. “I’m hunkering down in my basement in anticipation of the release of the deadly new 2TB Time Capsule. I hope I have enough MREs.” That’s just not right somehow.

    OH YES !

This seems more worth it now. I’m planning on getting a MBP soon but I thought this was too expensive. I have a 720MB for my iMac that I don’t know what I’m going to do with now but 1TB wireless sounds great. I have another router I don’t know what to do with either.

  3. Grant Says:

    720MB? That’s a pretty small hard drive? ;)

  4. Truth Says:

You can get a $70 – $80 1TB external HDD right now. How and why this so expensive I do not know.

  5. Rene Ritchie Says:

    $200 Airport Extreme + 1TB HD =

  6. A.J. Says:

It’s because it is a wireless hardrive. With osx 10.5 your computer backs up automatically every hour. Ands it’s a pretty great and easy to set up router.

  7. A.J. Says:

That’s why it is a little pricey. And did you see the apple logo? Lol

  8. Dyvim Says:

Time Capsule. New 2TB capacity. Same slow-as-molasses NAS performance.

    (and yes, I have one.)

  9. Adam Says:

@dyvim it’s slow? You mean the backups right? Cause I heard it does great as a router.

  10. Grant Says:

Dyvim, why do you need speed if you use this as a backup drive? Time Machine runs in the background, so I’m not sure why speed is important.

  11. Meridian Says:

Can this be used as just a network drive with Time machine turned off?

  12. Grant Says:

    Meridian, yes.

  13. Dyvim Says:

@7/9/10- It’s ok as a router (although its range is less than other n routers I’ve owned) and works great as a print server. Wired backups are fine although wireless backups have been flaky (often failing with no explanation) and I’ve given up on those. Plays well with an Airport Extreme to extend my WiFi network to cover my entire house. But if you want to use it as a NAS- to read/write files other than just TM backups, then its performance compared to other NAS devices is really quite poor. I have 2 Buffalo NAS’s connected through the TC and they work much faster and more reliably than the TC itself for file transfers.

@Truth, see that little Apple on the top. That means memory prices are at least twice the market price.

  15. Truth Says:

    @ Rene Ritchie

Why would you buy a $200 router?

It better have at least a 50 mile coverage radius.

  16. Iblackdude Says:

    Nice. But tooooo expensive.
