iPhone 3GS Suffering Heat Discoloration?

white iPhone 3GS discoloration from heat

We haven’t seen or heard about this at TiPb, though it did happen once upon a time with Apple’s white MacBooks — heat related discoloration. We hope and imagine Apple learned from this, but have any of you experienced your white iPhone 3GS suddenly getting a tan? If so, let us know in the comments and more importantly, make an appointment at the Apple Store to get it swapped out ASAP!

This really freaks me out since I got a white 32 GB 3GS.

I’m sure Apple would cover it though. The pains of being an early adopter i guess.

  2. Chris Says:

I have the same thing, 32GB White 3GS. I notice the battery drains extremely fast. At a rate of 1% each minute. The heating issue gets really warm for me.

  3. Mr E Says:

@Chris Im having the same issue….idk I’ve tried everything and Apple never returned my email…I’m guessing this is the new Geogre Foreman feature

  4. Michael Denney Says:

If your battery is draining that fast then there is certainly something wrong.

Try turning any “push”, “fetch”, or “exchange” type of services off and see if this stops the quick drain.

  5. Dodswm Says:

    @Mr E – you’d need 2 iPhones for that, for even grilling ;)

  6. CuseMan2008 Says:

I wasn’t exactly impressed with the color of the white 3GS to begin with. It’s not a clean, crisp white… More like a white t-shirt that’s been washed. Heat hasn’t been an issue for me with the 16GB – just battery drain, like Chris said. For heavy/frequent on the go users, you’re screwed if you don’t keep some type of charger with you.

  7. CuseMan2008 Says:

Even with push turned off it still drains fast.

  8. Natethagreat Says:

I haven’t had any serious battery issues with my white 16 gig 3gs or overheating issues either, but my keyboard won’t turn at all I guess i’ll have to go find sone tech support or something lol.

  9. BarryL Says:

Uhm if you have a white iphone and your a dude thats like owning a pink tshirt. LOL white iphones are for sissys and girls. Black is where its at.

  10. Bruno Says:

    @ BarryL,

In regarding your comment… if the color of your phone determines your sexuality or your cool factor, you were obviously an insecure sally or a fruit, and hiding behind the color of your iPhone prove your manhood/manliness.

  11. MSF Says:

Real men wear pink! Real men carry white iPhones!

  12. Joe McG Says:

Please ask yourself, would Arnold use a white phone? Nope, cuz it makes you a little Girly Man!!!!

    I got your back, BarryL.

  13. only1jonarius Says:

nxt yrs iohone I want white. currently have clean black 3g…time for a change of scenary.

  14. Moe Says:

If you have an iPhone then buy Invisble Shield I got one and it works really good.

    The installation is easy!

  15. Brad Says:

Instead of Invisible Shield get BodyGuardz because they are actually better feeling and they give you 2 sets for the same price.

  16. CuseMan2008 Says:

    Whatever you say Barry Manilow

  17. CuseMan2008 Says:

Smartphones are for smart people… Not idiots like Barry who don’t know the difference between your and you’re.

  18. Dan Hawk Says:

Interesting that none of the above coments have anything to do with iPhone discoloration?

  19. Bruno Says:

    @Joe McG

Stop hiding behind your iPhone. By the way, it’s no iPhone but here’s Arnie and a white phone for the record: http://bit.ly/WXdEu

    Sucka

  20. Jeuke Says:

Hello folks, my new 3gs battery was draining also. I took it back to apple and they gave me some BS about something but when I asked for my cash refund they found a way to replace it. I have been keeping the new one next to the charger so I don’t know if its any better, I only know that the first one died in my pocket. NOT GOOD considering my previous iphone never came close to fully draining. If this one doesn’t work out I’m taking it back and asking for a refund, switch to T-Mobile

  21. Joe McG Says:

    @Bruno

LMAO!!!!! I seriously just fell on the floor laughing!!!

  22. icebike Says:

@Rene: Is that image above photoshopped due to lack of an actual image?

The reason I ask is because the pattern does not correspond with any of the heat producing elements inside the phone.

This looks more like something that happened when someone set it on a very hot surface, baked it in the sun, or something similar.

If you look at tear down photos, there is nothing near the camera or bottom edge that produces enough heat.

If you ask me, this is the result of abuse of some sort.

  23. Jeremy Sikora Says:

@Icebike, I could not agree more. Exactly what I thought when I saw the picture.

  24. Natethagreat Says:

Nothing cleaner than a white iPhone stop hating cause you black iPhone users are to nasty to keep it clean. White iPhones are god like that’s right god like.

  25. Kona Says:

On another note…Can someone figure out how to connect a Flash Drive thru USB to the iphone for added space. Sort of an external drive. Please let me know if this is already available. Many Thanks

  26. Smartiphoneuser Says:

If you guys are all having problems with your battery draining try turning your 3G,WiFi, and your Gps and only turning them on when you need them. My battery now lasts five times longer than it did before

  27. kuld33p Says:

It may be because this user had put his/her phone somewhere near the heat.. otherwise why the millions other who bought are not complaining.

  28. Jesh Says:

my iphone gets very hot when its in the car, i have no discoloring, no fast battery draining and yes im a guy with a white iPhone. haha

  29. analog spirit Says:

The discoloration on that white iPhone makes it look like it had been kept inside some type of rubber casing, and the color somehow rubbed off or bled into the plastic. Is that possible with certain makes and models of aftermarket external rubber casings?

  30. Coolbell Says:

With reference to the iPhone and overheating. I have the 3g have done for almost a year. Since 3.0 I have experienced really bad battery life and the iPhone becomes very hot Which it never did on 2.0+ software even when charging. I often get a very hot phone with 3g off and just using an app such as facebook. Concerns me slightly.

  31. Tom S Says:

anybody is says white is for girls is an idiot.

  32. ff11 Says:

@Smartiphoneuser, instead of turning off all the features of the iPhone, why don’t we just carry around a some wood, matches and a blanket so we can communicate by smoke signals?

We aren’t getting a phone with all these features so we can turn off the features.

  33. Johnny Tran Says:

are you guys serious… i’m nervous now… I have a defected white iphone and I just exchanged another one last week… Now yall freak me out.. I just like white for stylist… now it converting to pink….. what the heck

  34. Johnny Tran Says:

but yeah… I have heating problem and the battery drain out so quick… I always have to carry the usb cable with me all the time… that’s so annoying for real… if the any possible chance can I return the phone a get something better? honestly… I love iphone… everything quick in the palm.. but the battery life is so terrible…..

  35. Bent24 Says:

I also have the white 32 gb 3gs and have no red pink marks show up. It does get warm sometime but no issues. My wife’s 16 gb 3gs black does get warmer dare I say hotter. Regarding comments about color or being a man and carrying a white phone… Please the people who always say something are people with “little man syndrome or other complex” I love this white phone…. Damn it’s ****!!!!! The wife feels the same regarding her black Iphone. To each is own.

  36. Joseph Kim Says:

I just got the new iPhone 3GS 32GB White and for some reason, the battery has been draining really quickly and my iPhone does get burning hot at some times when it’s not even in use.

  37. Cody Says:

I seen a YouTube review where a guy used his iPhone 3GS for about 10 days and his battery increased each day. i guess you need to “break in” the battery lol. But i’m getting an iPhone, and praying this wont happen.

  38. shane Says:

is the white i phone white on the front and back or just the back?

  39. Kimochi Says:

wheather this is a real problem to the white 3Gs or not, i m still glad i got a white. the only difference in the hardware is just the back plate’s color, if there is a problem when apple make these babies, it will happen to all devices black and white. at least i can see the discoloration on mine (white), black ones should be worrying cuz u’ll still be using it when there is a problem

  40. Franchise Says:

This heat discoloration is really ugly to look at. I can’t even look at my iPhone, espicailly for a cean type of person I am. Will apple let me swap it out for a new one?

  41. Billy Says:

That’s the thing. I’m meant to get a 16GB White iPhone 3GS this thursday and was wondering, IF it did turn pink or any other type of colour, would Apple let me replace it?

  42. trimi Says:

I have the same problem with discolorating… I just bought my iPhone 3 days ago… Im so ***** dissapointed. I paid 600 Euros and this fuking thing happened.

  43. Tim Says:

I have a iPhone 3GS WHITE and i got a black leather case from ebay. had it on for about 3 weeks then took it out of the case to clean it and there was a 1 inch thick black streak going all the way down the back of the case. I tryed the magic eraser, soap everything i could think of. I then tryed VODKA rubbed it with a micro fiber cloth for about 45 min. ITS JUST LIKE BRAND NEW. IF ANYONE HAS AN ISSUE WITH THIS USE VODKA. doesent rub any of the writing off nothing my iPhone looks brand new and i threw out the crappy leather case
