Having Problems with iPhone 3.0?
If you’re anything like us, the moment iPhone 3.0 hit iTunes, you hit the update button. For many, it was smooth sailing from that point on. For others…?
Not so much. We’re hearing about several issues, from disconnecting Wi-Fi in 2nd Gen iPod touches (hello BT radio!) to missing apps, to sync issues, to push problems, to seach nulls, to my own little bizarre issue:
All my media is fine on my iPhone, but when I plug it in to iTunes, it’s read as gigabytes of “other” data and I get a helpful message saying my iPhone is already full.
Of course, the nu-cu-lar option is always a clean restore, but if you want to troubleshoot first, check out TiPb’s iPhone Forums. Our users are among the smartest in iPhone — and iPod touch –space, and with our cracker-jack mod team in place, we can all help each other to… help each other.

The only problem I have had so far w/my 3.0 update is the lag when scrolling thru homescreens when looking for an App other than that I’m good to go.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Major problems with sending AOL email. Called Apple and turned off “smtp.aol.com” server and used AT&T server.
Many others had the same problem.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Mine also seems fine. Only issue I had was while installing 3.0, after really. It said it was done and that my iPhone was restarting and would appear in iTunes after that. After it connected again iTunes said it couldn’t read the SIM card and I should go to an AT&T store to get a new SIM. I just diconnected the iPhone and plugged it back in, after a few minutes it verified and activated fine. All seems fine.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
The sole issue I had was after the update the phone wouldn’t pick up the cell network signal and nothing seemed to fix it (reset network settings, remove/reseat SIM card, power cycling, etc). Ultimately I bit the bullet and went from scratch. Thankfully it’s mostly pain-free to do so, just time-consuming replacing all the media.

I am having an issue with Safari on iPhone 3.0 – when you go to a web site that uses or relies upon drop down menus you can no longer use them. It used to be one tap would drop the menu down and then a second tap on the header would follow the header. Essentially the first tap was a “mouse over”. Now once you touch a drop down menu header it immediately follows that link – you will usually see the menu drop down a split second before Safari begins navigating away essentially making many popular websites almost un-usable.
This really hits home for my company as we use the iPhone on the go to access our enterprise business systems that make extensive use of drop-down menus. Please, Apple – Fix this feature in Safari!
June 18th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I have exactly the problem shown in the image, about 5 GB of orange “other” content. This is phantom content that does not really exist on my phone.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
As far as the orange “other” content, I have also had that problem. Sometimes, syncing a single song will fix the index that your iTunes is using to report usage. Not always, mind you, but about half of the time, in my experience.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Missing Apps is due to the Apps that went missing were not 3.0 compatiable
June 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
So far everything is working great but I experienced 4 issues things that bothered me or still bothering me: One is that after 3.0 my Exchange address book was removed and I had to re-config it. The second thing is that every time I turn the iPhone on and off or reset, after the Apple logo during booting a blank screen shows for few seconds before showing the unlock screen. The third thing is that typing in text boxes on Safari is very slow and laggy. The forth thing is that sometimes instead of showing AT&T it shows ’searching’ while surfing the web or talking on the phone.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
@Michael
From the few websites I have visited with the drop down menus, I haven’t had an issue with. However, on your website, it does seem to load a webpage, that might actually have to do with the coding on the site. I was able to see the drop down immediately and I was able to stop the loading of the page before it continued on.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
@Matt Sawyers It depends on the site and how it’s coded – if there is no link associated with the header it works beautifully. If there is a header associated it won’t work.
Until BestBuy fixes this (they said they’re working on it) you can see a perfect example on BestBuy.com – you can click on the header and then very quickly hit the STOP button to use the drop down menu but that’s a pain.
It used to be the first touch was mouse-over and second was mouse-click when there was a mouse-over code on the object. I used to be able to browse BestBuy.com beautifully on the iPhone on Safari but as of 3.0 it’s a pain. Check BestBuy.com for yourself.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
@Michael:
I’m not seeing the drop down problem even on nasty drop-down berserker sites like Microsoft MSDN:
http://s479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/icebike/?action=view¤t=photo-8.jpg
I wonder if clearing your cash would help?
June 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I would like to add that the representative from BestBuy I spoke with that is in charge of web development stated that the “fix” will be to remove all drop-down menus from the “mobile” version of BestBuy – effectively mobile browsers will get a dumbed-down version of the site due to mobile devices not being able to support drop down menus.
The thing that really annoys me is that I moved from my Windows Mobile powered HTC device primarily due to Safari and its ability to allow me to use the browser on the phone like I would on a PC – quickly and efficiently – and a big plus was mouse-over events working in a sane and reasonable fashion.
I will be more than happy to point out hundreds of web sites with drop down menus that do not work on the iPhone as of 3.0 – such as MySpace.com and BestBuy.com. Yes you can use the drop down menus if your internet is somewhat slow or you’re really quick on hitting the stop button but in 2.2.1 and prior you never had to do this as it simply *worked.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
i had major problems but i have a quick few ?’s. is there supposed to be a tab under setting for the push notification? and what about the battery icon percentage?
June 18th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
@icebike Some sites – the drop down menus do work – but not all sites as they used to.
You linked to a PhotoBucket image – but try using the drop down menus on PhotoBucket.com on the “Web” version – you will see the menu drop down but it will already be loading the page associated with the header. You can probably hit a sub-menu item fast or stop the loading but why should you have to do that?
Try BestBuy.com as well.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
My only issue is that now for some reason the phone won’t stay connected to my home WiFi. I have to reconnect each time I access my phone.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
A copule of problems. When I turn my phone off and turn it back on I get a black screen and it comes on. Keyboard in safari is slow. Autofill doesn’t work and does anyone know what happened to the battery indicator that was supposed to come with 3.0
June 18th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
I really need some way to record what my iPhone screen is doing – I can point my camcorder at it but surely there is a better way.
Here are a list of sites that the drop down menus do not work correctly on Safari on 3.0 (but they did on 2.2.1). You may say that most of them have a Mobile version or an iPhone version that works great but 1) it’s missing features in most cases and 2) sometimes you want or need to use the full version as well as 3) it worked before, why doesn’t it work now? I enjoyed Safari on the iPhone because it could handle user interface components such as Drop Down menus and Mouse-Over effects but now as of 3.0 it does not do so across the board.
BestBuy.com PhotoBucket.com (Web Version – Dumbed Down UI) MySpace.com (Web Version – Dumbed Down UI) FaceBook.com (Regular Version, not iPhone Version) Once logged in – the top navigation bar. Yahoo.com – in 2.2.1 and on the PC you can click the “More” button located above the search bar below the logo to the right of “Web|Images|Video|Local|Shopping” to drop down a list such as “Answers, Directory, Jobs, News, All Search Services…” on the iPhone as of 3.0 you can drop the list down but you have to choose quick or hit stop or it navigates on to the “More Services” page.
The fact is that I didn’t get an iPhone so I could browse mobile pages – I got an iPhone so I could browse full-featured web pages like I would on my desktop. There are more examples out there and I will bring more to light if needed.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
A lot of these problems sound like they can be fixed simply by restoring as a new phone. I actually has hardware issues where a quarter of my screen was working at all for long periods of time. If in doubt go to Apple. They will often restore in store and if your problems persist swap the phone out.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I tweeted and shared on facebook
June 18th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I, too, am having a few minor issues. One of the main ones is the occasional small lag present on the SpringBoard. The Safari keyboard is there, but it’s not at a point of being bothersome. I’ve noticed the blank screen when rebooting the device. Again, this is something that’s not bothersome for me.
I have a theory on this. I think the OS is acting like this because it may have been optimized for the iPhone 3GS, with it faster processor and stuff. I could be wrong.
This minor issues are not bothersome. I can live with it.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Had same 6 gig of other issue. Did restore and it fixed itself but that was before i upgraded to 3.0
June 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
My WiFi won’t stay engaged.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
So I use Gmail via IMAP in Mail.app, and went I search to e-mails from Spotlight, I land in some kind of weird “Local Mailboxes” area, where I’m not able to navigate back to my Inbox. When I go back out to the home screen, then hit the envelope icon again, I land right back in to “Local Mailboxes.” None of my mail appears there. The only way I could figure out how to get out of Local Mailbox Limbo is to restart the phone.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
@ upgrading to 3.0 software, my phone now cannot (AT ALL) connect to my WIFI. Won’t even see the network. Was on the phone last night with Apple Care for 2+ hrs and we troubleshooted everything from phone to router. They were baffled of this issue and are sending me a new unit manana in the hopes that new hardware might be the fix. I recommend anyone having WIFE issues after the 3.0 install contact Apple support so they can log user errors into their system for a “bug patch” that their already working on according to the Apple Care technicians i talked to last night. Hope this helps =)
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
LOL! “WIFE ISSUES”!!! I meant WIFI issues!!! LOL! Sorry guys!
June 18th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
This might just be me, but has anyone else noticed their battery is draining FAST after installing 3.0 software? My phone is half dead and I haven’t even used my phone that much this a.m.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Donnie: I saw fast battery drain after upgrade. I rebooted phone and all is well.
The only notifications app I have is AP news, and I FETCH, (not push) three mail accounts on a 30 minute basis.
@Jesse: WE are not the ones you need to apologize to for you Freudian slip.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Yeah, I’ve experienced the wi-fi problem… but not this case though.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
@Auntiewiv and others with large amounts of “OTHER” storage use.
You very seldom ever have to full restore to fix this. It is a long standing problem that is easily fixed by adding a single song or a single Free App (which you can subsequently delete if you wish).
Its a corrupted sqlite database on the phone, but adding one item fixes it.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I can’t find the cord to my camcorder so I used the webcam on my laptop to record this issue to put it on YouTube – the quality is low but it’s clear enough to see what’s going on. I hope to have it on YouTube in about an hour.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
I have 3 pop mail accounts and mobile me (with push) and don’t use fetch. Under the old OS, when you open “Mail” it checks all the accounts and populates with the number of messages. Now it only checks the mobile me account unless you open the individual account windows. Apple Tech says no one else has complained yet.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
I dont have push working on anything except AP news. AIM wont work nor will ESPN Not only do they not work for push but there isnt even the option to turn them on in the settings on my iphone or the app itself. When i play a song off spotlight search it goes to just any random song (happened like 5 times) and my pioneer head unit in my car no longer recognizes my phone to play songs on the head units interface. F*CK 3.0. I guess im restoring and starting all over again
June 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Upgraded (2) 2G phones. All was well on my wife’s. The only snag on mine is that the default language came back as Danish. That was weird! But, thankfully as is well. But, doesn’t matter, our new 3GS phones are coming to our door tomorrow anyway! Goodbye 2G phones!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Upgrade went smoothly until I tried to open Maps application – since the upgrade, my location “pin” is approximately 2 blocks away from my current location!!!! Help!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Here is a short video on YouTube that illustrates the drop down menu issue in iPhone OS 3.0 & Safari:

June 18th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
3G – 16GB I’m encountering definite delays when I use the magnifier API. I’ve had unresponsive touches 5+ times since yesterday. TweetDeck is getting destroyed each time it runs.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
i been having that “orange” problem way before 3.0 i think it happen when you unplug you iphone from itunes to fast or the wrong way
i usually get the “orange” thing but all my data has been delete and it still show orange
crazy
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
my Maps application works smoothly…except that the little blue dot is always about a street behind where I actually am which makes navigating a bit tricky
June 18th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I had only one problem and that was with stereo Bluetooth. It works great while the iPhone screen is on, when I turn off the screen the audio gets extremely choppy. Turn the screen back on and it works fine again. It’s a very strange issue. I think we will be seeing a software release with some bug fixes in a few weeks.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
@SlimFromDC:
The Orange problem (as shown at top of this article) is easily cleared by going to itunes on the phone and downloading one free app or one tune.
You notice in the image above there is no music listed. Thats because the music database is hozed, but it will get rebuilt by adding one song.
And yes, this problem has been there for the last several releases.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Having major trouble with 3.0 – Updated First Gen iPhone and it had problems such as the orange screen of death pictured above. Tried to RESTORE but kept getting an error. ERROR (9) -or- ERROR (2005)
I am now trying to RESTORE from a (gulp) PC. Arghhhhhhh, wish me well.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I have found what may be a glitch, in the app store you can now redeem (YAY!) but when you tap edit in the more section all my changes there are lost everytime i restart the app. I also noticed that you can only redeem on wifi?
June 18th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
I updated mine and now I can’t surf the net or anything network related unless on WiFi
June 18th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
My 3G iPhone has been sluggish since the update and it’s “glitchy”. Some apps freeze and close (like TwitterFon) and it disconnected from my Wi-Fi on it’s own. I rebooted it and so far everything’s working ok. Crossing my fingers. Can’t say I’m surprised… God forbid they get the kinks out before they release anything. lol
June 18th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
OMG I had this problem way back 1st Gen iPhone! I called Apple and they absolutely no idea what I was talking about…I had to live with it. Then one day I synced and it disappeared thankfully….great it’s back now ugh. Good luck people :-/
June 18th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
I can’t sync music. iTunes reports that the sync has completed, but the iPhone remains stuck on the “syncing” screen. Even after 3 hours — it’s still on that screen. (I’ve now done this 3 or 4 times, with 3 hours being the longest one.) Upon swiping to “cancel” the sync, I discovered there’s no music at all on my iPhone.
I tried instructing iTunes to remove all music from the iPhone (thinking I would then re-sync the music), but the iPhone simply will not sync any music at all. All other data syncs fine.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
I use a mophie battery pack–not sure if there’s any correlation, but my battery reads full no matter what-even right up to the moment that my battery died. Normally, I leave my Mophie in the ‘off’ position until I get a low battery message on the iPhone.
Apparently the auxiliary battery is now ‘fooling’ the software into believing that the internal battery is full. I did not even get a ‘warning, 20% of battery remaining’ message. Just dead, till I recharged it.
On the upside, my internal battery lasted a little longer today than before the upgrade.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Is anybody having a problem backing up your iPhone? It seems to like it’s taking forever. I tried to reboot the iPhone…. Thanks
June 18th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
WiFi keeps disconnecting on my iPod Touch 2nd Gen
June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
I had the orange “other” data problem, I just re-synced and it was gone.
I did a clean restore to my phone in an attempt to fix alot of problems.
One problem was fixed with the restore:
*Getting weird glitches in some apps. ie blank white screens where a safari window was supposed to open. Invalid entry message while trying to type in text boxes
the following problems are still present after the clean restore:
*I get the blank screen for ~4 after the apple logo when booting. *In maps after setting a route sometimes the purple circle will be in the wrong place or completely absent. *My more button in app store is gone. *The little data spinnwheel in the status bar somtimes just flashes very rapidly. *The phishing site switch in safari settings is missing.
thats all I can remember off the top of my head I’m sure theres more. It feels like it’s a open beta now. Hopefully these problems will be fixed soon.
Lookin forward to 3.0.1
June 18th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
I have problems with the battery indicators. Though my iPhone’s battery is below 20%, when i plug my phone, the battery indicator in the upper right says it’s already full after plugging it for just a few seconds.. help please..
June 18th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
My only problem is when I push the send button on my text box to bring up the keyboard, it does not work. My wife has the same problem with her phone.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:08 am
After restarting I don’t get the carrier name in the top left hand side only “searching….3G”. Ejecting the sim card seems to work, but when I restart my phone I get the same issue. I did a complete restore and set my iPhone up as a new iPhone on iTunes, that seemed to sort the problem out. Vodafone and Vodacom South Africa are not yet setup for MMS and Internet Tethering, not to sure when that will happen as they didn’t seem to know that the update 3.0 was released on the 17th. When i called I was told that the update would only be released near the end of the month.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:24 am
I was facing the same issue. Restored my iPhone and now everything looks good.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:13 am
@josh r.:
Run your phone down till it shuts off by itself, then recharge it till you see the Plug symbol.
You need to calibrate the charge measuring circuit once in a while by this procedure.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:20 am
I have same problem as many others that upgraded to 3.0, short battery life and phone hot. I have seen many threads solving the problem in various ways, but nothing that have worked for me.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:34 am
@icebike
Thanks! I’ll do that. I hope it’ll work for my phone.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Had the wifi issue, did a clean install and it seems to be working fine now. It’s less “glitchy” now too, but not glitch-free yet that’s for sure.
@Josh R – I don’t know your charging situation, but when I had mine plugged into my car stereo, running maps and streaming music to the car, the battery would say it was fully charged when it was really being drained. Shutting maps down got it to charge again. I don’t think I would have had a problem if I were plugged into a regular charger but I don’t think the stereo could handle it.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Hi there! Since updating my iPhone, I cannot get to new photos. The ones I had on my phone before update are available but when I go to the photos menu it says I have 235 photos…when I open the folder only 202 are there (photos from pre-update) How can I fix this??
June 19th, 2009 at 11:34 am
after updating the first issue I had was syncing apps. the phone said the computer wasnt authorized, after logging in a second time while the phone was connected, I was able to sync the apps properly. Also having issue with exchange email sync, some folders just wont sync on the phone any more. They were there before the update and working fine, and now, they dont even show up as available. Unfortunately they are folders I need all the time. Suggestions welcome.
June 19th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Lost all my SMS messages.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I restored from backup and my apps were put where I had set them instead of in alphabetical order. Is this a new thing or did I accidentally hit one of those weird ctrl + shift things that apple loves to throw in there?
June 19th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Like Josh R I too have had battery problems after upgrading a 2.0 model iPhone. My battery drains quickly and the phone becomes very hot. I turned off Push and Location, and perhaps it drained a bit slower, but nevertheless it drained and started dissipating heat as if it was my MacBook Pro. Also, my mail is not being retrieved when asked. The phone seems to cut away from Mail after just a few seconds of searching for new messages. Oh yes, my WiFi signal goes in and out, yet my MacBook signal remains strong and constant. I had none of these problems the day before upgrade, so if it walks like a duck then it must be the Leopard scenario all over again, especially after reading this forum. But my faith in Apple says 3.01 is on its way already. Please….??!!
June 19th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
turn off push notifications. it saved a lot of battery life and fix the lag on my springboard.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Before I upgraded to 3.0 I could plug in an aftermarket AV lead and watch videos via my Plasma. Now after the upgrade when I plug the AV lead in the phone says “Enhancement not supported” although the audio comes through ok, there’s no video. Any ideas?
June 19th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
my youtube is not clear. its displaying the low resolution rather than the high quality videos. i tried restarting my phone but nothing. it happened before back when i updated to 2.2, i think, but was eventually fixed by going to settings>general>reset>reset network. help me out someone.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:04 am
I have a problem synching Notes. I cannot get Notes to sync.
June 20th, 2009 at 6:22 am
Initially after upgrading to 3.0 I didn’t have the “orange bar” issue with the phone database becoming corrupted. I have yet to rectify it despite the suggestions made here. I’ve tried syncing music from the computer to the phone, downloading an app on the computer and syncing, downloading an app on the phone directly, etc. all to no avail. Short of a restore (which is undesirable) are there other things one can try in order to remedy the database?
June 20th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
UNBELIEVABLE!
STUPIDLY, I upgraded to 3.0 the day before a business trip.
I’m across the country and my phone is literally USELESS. I’ve put too much dependence on my phone and the apps. Now I’m dead in the water…
I noticed a little lag before I left, but thought it was would clear up.
The lag is unbearable. There’s a 2-3 second delay when I try to do anything. I’ve uninstalled all my non-essential apps thinking there was a conflict. I’ve done a hard reset several times. Turned off wi-fi and bluetooth. Nothing works
Something is burning my processor hot. The back of my phone is hot and after about 2 hours, the battery is dead.
Totally my fault… I shouldn’t have upgraded… Now I’m doing my business on payphones (remember those?)
Does anyone have a solution?
June 20th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
i have the problem with the battery problems too and when you open the text or any app is kind of slow. i dont understand this upgrade was meant to fix a lot a problems but i think the las software was better i dont know. well i do like the landscape keyboard but the iphone si slower than before and i dont wanna upgrade to the iphone 3gs cuz i dont think si that much better ill preffer to wait till next year maybe they would have that you processor that intel is making that is the size of a penni. the the iphone is going to be the best smat phone ever
June 20th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Every time I use my iPhone I have to re-enter my password. The Settings option used to allow 1 hour of inactivity before requiring a password. I understand increasing security, and possibly even forcing “instant” as the default, but the option to select something more convenient has been removed.
June 20th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Downloaded the new software and now my iPhone won’t receive any emails. It connects, says it is downloading a new message and then boots me back to the app screen. The setup for my email is the same as before the software update. Any ideas?
June 20th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Since downloading the new software, my iPhone is no longer synching correctly with my exchange server — I’m missing most of my contacts and calendar entries. Not sure what to do with this…
June 21st, 2009 at 5:33 pm
My battery is running dead at the end of every day now..It used to last 3-4 days.. My exchange server stopped working.. I deleted it and tried to reconfigure it and realized that the IMAP configuration option was gone.. I am out of email. I am calling support tomorrow to try to go back to previous version.. What a joke.. If this were a ploy for us to get the new phone, you can go f… yourself Apple..
June 21st, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Another one with the 2 hour battery life and the burning hot backplate – its as if the CPU is stuck on 100%… this sukks
June 21st, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Just got a new iPhone three days ago and downloaded apps were working fine. Then updated to OS 3.0 and none of my third party downloaded apps are working. When opened, it just goes right back to the home screen. Tried deleting and then re-installing but that doesnt work. NEED HELP PLEASEEE
June 21st, 2009 at 11:41 pm
I’ve had several issues. I have granted iTunes access to my PC and Laptop. I tried to do the 3.0 upgrade on my Laptop (usually done on PC) and it completely crashed my phone. iTunes has renamed my phone and I can’t find the option to select a phone profile under the name usually used. It is now “Unknown”.
-I lost some 100 pictures in the fiasco.
-iTunes is not finding many of the songs I have already purchased but it will tell me that I purchased them but they are nowhere to be found.
I started this last night and have not figured out yet, what else has gone wrong.
This is very frustrating.
I decided to upgrade to 3.0 because my iPhone had been doing this neat trick of creating a click sound and then giving me a 5-7 second delay. It chose to do this only when I was trying to speak to a client which was very unnerving for both of us. I will find out tomorrow if the delay is still happening. It would do it in 2G and 3G. My Hubby has the 2G and is on the same cell towers as me all day every day and has never experienced this.
I love my iPhone but some of the issues are not just minor annoyances.

So I’m asking myself: Is ‘copy & paste’ really worth all this? If you would of asked me that last Tuesday I would of said of course… today my answer is no way!
With my 3g phone I’ve had endless issues with this ‘upgrade’… programs lagging, less battery life, syncing problems, email accounts pushing emails when my push is customized to not push those accounts and THE MOST ANNOYING my WIFI connection is completely hosed. I’ve done everything imaginable, from wiping the phone clean and starting from the beginning, reseting all network connections, to constant rebooting, alas I can’t get constant contact with my WIFI. At best the connection bounces in and out, as if the internal WIFI chip is turning off and on. Some forums have suggested turning off all push sources, which I have done to no avail. Before the upgrade I had none of these problems.
I’m hoping 3.0.1 isn’t far behind. This is clearly something that wasn’t ready for primetime.

Ever since upgrading my wife’s iPhone to 3.0, it is constantly transmitting; I can tell because it’s interfering with our baby monitor, battery life as a result of this, is horrible. The only way I was able to get it to stop was to turn on 3G. Whereas before, I turned 3G off to sustain battery life, now it needs to be on so I get more than 2 hours of use. Agreed… not sure if Copy and Paste was this critical.

Hello, i have a TERRIBLE problem with my iphone. I upgraded it to the new software and there’s an image on the screen with the end of the wire and the itunes icon. I have turned it on and off, removed and put back again the sim card, uninstalled and install itunes again but nothing works…
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 am
the only problem i have had so far is that “notes” updated a bunch of old stuff and my new notes didnt transfer. and now, if i try and delete the old notes, it crashes and brings me back to the home screen. I have tried restoring and that didnt work
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 am
I’m having the same problem as Allan and Bill. First gen iPhone will not connect to mail at all. I almost had some success with gmail, but I’m getting NO communication with the exchange server at all! Also iPhone running very hot and battery keeps draining. I finally managed to get enough battery power to reboot, but it does not seem to have helped anything. I haven’t even been able to use cut and paste!
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 am
3.0 upgrade went smooth. BUT, now my phone is running HOT, literally. I pulled it out of my bag and it was hot and the battery was almost dead. I am averaging 4 hour battery life and hot battery. This started, literally, right after I upgraded. Any ideas?
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 am
I cant believe this… Thought the upgrade worked perfectly… Until I tried to listen to some of my music on my iPhone… It’s not there anymore. When I plugged my iPhone in and went to the summary tab I noticed the “Other” files seemed to have taken over my music… Cant sync, cant change or remove music… Trying a restore now… Better work or Jobs is getting a phone in his face
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:58 am
It worked.
Once you restore from factory and then restore from a previous backup you should hopfully get an error when it tries to sync the music… So in othereword everthing is fixed except for you music… Simply drag and drop from your music library to your iphone and hey presto you have music again.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
i have the battery issue to….red hot back and after a full charge lasts about 4 hours. WIll try completely killing the battery and then a full recharge. if that fails…it’s going back to the store!

I have an Iphone. Ever since the new updates on the 19th my yahoo email doesnt have direct push capablities. I need my emails immediately. Anyone have any suggestions for a fix. My IPhone is now useless for business.
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Help! I have three mail accounts on my iPhone (mac.com, Yahoo, and Exchange). All worked fine until 3.0 update…now everytime I hit the mail icon, it goes to my Yahoo account for about 3 seconds, then defaults to the phone homescreen again.
If I try toggle back out of Yahoo to access my other accounts, the phone resets to the homescreen again. I’ve tried rebooting my phone and re-entering username and passwords in the mail settings, all to no avail. Anyone have a fix for this?
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Upgraded to 3.0 last night. Now all of my applications crash immediately after opening.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I also noticed that after installing 3.0 my battery life dropped dramatically. Im also having trouble receiving calls and text message. Anyone having the same problem?
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Also cannot connect to exchange mail to send or receive since updating to 3.0. Checks for mail and says it is downloading but then goes to the mail screen without downloading. Battery life sucks now. Don’t want to wait for Apple support (?). Any suggestions?
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:48 pm
My wife and I have an iphone each, and one computer, a MacBook Pro. I plugged in my iphone into the computer when I bought my iphone about 5 months ago and everything ran smoothly. My wife plugged her’s into a friends computer at around the same time as we wernt aware that you could have 2 iphones into one computer (She also took a few of their songs and apps – under their account).
Anyway, the iphone 3.0 software has come out, and me now understanding that she can plug in her iphone into my computer (only found that out today) I installed the new software onto her phone, plugged her phone into my computer and downloaded the software. Thats all working fine. My problem now is that when it goes to backup it takes either so long or rushes through and doesnt sync anything. i have prompted the phone to now take off all the old music from her phone and to replace it with new music from my itunes library. I’ve also prompted the apps to do the same. However when the sync apparently finishes, theres no new music (just a the titles from the old set that she had from her friends computer that don’t play) and no new applications. How do I resolve this problem?
June 22nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Ever since I upgraded to 3.0 (unlocked) from 2.1 (unlocked), my battery has not even lasted me 4 hours on and less than 1 hour of talk time. This is bullcrap, because I’ve never had any battery issues before; the battery would usually last me 1 1/2 – 2 days.
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Since upgrading to 3.0 my iphone receives duplicate emails. Any ideas? Also after syncing with my MAC laptop, my photos also duplicated. ANY Suggestions? Thanks!
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm
After I downloaded the 3.0 software, my life changed forever. My iphone has cured my AIDS! Thanks Apple you are truley lifesavers.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Hi All, I do NOT see a cellular data setting on my iPhone. I’m on ATT legit and everything works like maps, youtube in 3G and in WIFI so all works well, but no “Cellular Data” setting in Network. I want to access my Visual Voicemail settings as it isn’t working. It just goes to normal voicemail. don’t care about MMS stuff. Any Thoughts?
Thank You, Lane

I have a big problem since upgrading to 3.0!!! I am now unable to Sync music with my iphone…. Everytime I try it will get to different points and say it is unable to read / write to hard disc. I have restored it 15 times and each time it will not download any music to it.
It also shows my iPhone as having Audio on. Simalar to the Orange Other, I get 3 gig of Blue Audio in iTunes but the iPhone is blank….
Any ideas as to why….?
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:43 am
Upgrade seemed ok but mail Acct now won’t sync. Won’t even register that there is a mail acct. Has anyone worked out how to fix this? Should I restore???
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:12 am
Tom (at 6:19 June 22) I’m having the identical problem with mail, which crashes back to the main screen within 8 secs. I’m going to a Genius this afternoon to make them fix it.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:33 am
Lag is annoying the hell out of me. The keyboard in Spotlight takes 2-3 seconds to appear. In general everything seems to be running much more slowly, especially app store and iTunes… takes maybe 20-30 seconds to load up even when I’m on my home’s wifi connection.
Had a play with the 3GS in a shop and it was so much smoother. I know the processor is faster but makes me wonder whether iPhone 3G can handle 3.0.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 am
i downloaded my 3g iphone to 3.0 then it sucefully update after that my fon not continuing changing. please help me what should i do.
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 am
Tom(June 21st, 2009 at 11:05 pm), i’m having the same issue with all apps crashing upon opening. This didnt happen for 2 days and then randomly started crashing on all downloaded apps. I got the 3G S and tried to reinstall 3.0 but did nothing. Have you found a fix? Thanks!
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
Did anyone figure out a solution to email crashing back to main screen?
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Olha que coisa estranha, tenho iphone 2G atualizado OS 3.0 (7A341). As vezes quando atendo e vou desligar a ligação dá pau e entra em modo de segurança. Desligo e ligo novamente e volta a funcionar. Não é sempre. Usei o Jeibreak para desbloquear
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
On iPhone 2G, and having networks disconnect randomly. Can happen dozens of times in as many minutes (Which is maddeningly frustrating!), but at other times goes hours fine. It’s weird.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Progress (?) to report. For some reason email no longer crashes, but searches interminably for new emails. Result is somewhat less frustrating, but result is the same (no new email).
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Need Help!…i updated to 3.0 but noticed that i did not get the zoom feature or the camera nor the compass on the iphone(as promised by apple)…someone troubleshoot with me.
Thanks Roman.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Having the same annoying issue with my email trying to update and then going back to the home screen. Someone help!! Super frustrating and I don’t have 4 hours to spend at an Apple store
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Roman – I think the zoom and the compass is only for the iphone 3GS not the 3.0 update.
June 24th, 2009 at 12:10 am
no response from phone wont light up. I am getting the charge sound when i plug it in but thats all
June 24th, 2009 at 12:24 am
After reading the list of laments I feel slightly frivolous about my complaint – I can’t get the keyboard to appear when I want update a note – hence no update possible and I have to make a new note instead of amending an existing one.
June 24th, 2009 at 12:41 am
yeah so i jailbroke mine and my wifi wasnt working before and i thought if i updated and jailbroke it it would work again and i could add ultra snow but my wifi wont work at all and now i cant use my phone . any suggestions?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:02 am
I was searching for the solution to the same problem as David Starr (Item 32) and came across your blog. When there are multiple email accounts, it appears OS 3.0 does not fetch pop accounts unless one enters into each individual inbox. The solution is changing the settings for pop accounts from fetch to manual as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9650363
June 24th, 2009 at 8:43 am

HELP!!!! A apple rep told me today that my problem is not a problem it’s just how it works BS!!! My husband and I both got the new iPhone 3g s. We brought them home and backed up all the data on our 3g. I called AT&T told them of the change, gave them the new IMEI numbers for each phone number, they told me all I had to do was put our sim cards in the new 3gs and activate the phone which will sync all apps, data in the apps and so on. I asked 3 times if I was going to lose ANY app data or anything for that matter and was told no! So I plugged my new phone in followed the instructions and all went well, so I thought. All my apps were there but all app data GONE! Games that my husband spent 2 months getting to level 100 were all lost apps were launching like they were brand new. I had a year of fertility & cancer data that I would share with my Dr ALL GONE! someone help! Two days prior I upgraded to 3.0 on old phones with no lost data & no problems what so ever. I’ve called AT&T & Apple and they tell me “they just don’t know” told me restore from backup should work? I DIDNT and I know it should bcs I have friends that had no problem. Someone tell me what to do..
June 24th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
I **** way too much
June 25th, 2009 at 7:51 am
I had the same problem as some of you guys. When I selected the Mail app it would go there for a few seconds and then suddenly revert back to the home screen. I couldn’t believe I was unable to access my emails! Also had a problem with it running hot and short battery life.
It turned out that the 3.0 upgrade had created extra dummy accounts in Mail, which was causing the problem. Go to Settings > Mail and delete any dummy or duplicate mail accounts.
Now all is working fine and battery life back to normal.
June 25th, 2009 at 8:15 am
This is for everyone who is having problems with Mail crashing and going back to the mail screen or app screen.
I was thinkering around, I have about 7 different mail accounts, I was going to delete one of them (since I don’t use at all) to see if this did anything.
When I went to “Settings” and then “Mail, Contacts, Calendar” I found at the end of my list of email accounts a random or dummy email account. I deleted it and that solved my problem.
My battery is back to working fine, since it’s not spending all the time trying to search for this random email.
Hope this helps.
June 25th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I had the exact same problem as Rene Ritchie today using 3.0 on a 3G. I had almost 4GB of Other showing up, and my Music didn’t appear. I created a new playlist and synched it, then SSH’d to /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control and deleted the folder Music . No more Other, and the new playlist is still there. Not sure why though.
June 25th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
only problem…when i listen to my songs on the ipod, it stops the song first then goes on to the next one. But then it doesnt even play i have to hit play again. BS
June 25th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
I installed the 3.0 update and after that was saying something about the sim card not accepted in another language…finally got it to let me use my phone but has a few glitches but the one that bugs me the most is with my Maps app. The blue location point is like on the other side of my current location…any idea if that can be fixed? and also…internet works on and off…not as good as what is was before.
Please…if any info on how to rectify the maps location problem, please help me …bugging me so much, the app is ussless without my current location.
Thanks!
June 25th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
The 3.0 software, unless altered, is speeding up the processor in the 2G and 3G iPhones. This can be done on any computer. The problem is, if the CPU can’t handle it, it will get very hot. A unit using a battery will drain it much more quickly. Also, things can go crazy. Program (and apps) can fail or not work at all (email, music, syncing, etc.). The 3Gs CPU is made to run at a higher speed (I hope). I’ve done this as a programmer on computers. Sometimes it works but usually there are problems.
June 26th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Ever since doing the OS 3.0 update, my iPhone (3G) is not able to close down an application when you hold the home button for 8-10 seconds. You were able to do this with the 2.x versions. As a result, my battery is draining quicker than before. I’ve restored and reset the phone to factory specs and re-updated the phone which, by the way I just bought in April, and the same problem persists. Has anyone else had this problem? Can others with 3.0 open something on the phone and try to hold the home button for 8-10 seconds and see if the app closes? What is happening is that the application closes if you hit the home button but, it’s technically still running in the background, thus draining the battery.

Whereas before, it would shut the screen off after a min of not using the phone, now I have to push the sleep/wake button. Anyone experiance this?
June 26th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I forgot to add the WIFI prob as well, I too am having that. Tried all the obvious fixes, but the phone does not even see my home WIFI.

June 27th, 2009 at 2:37 am
Ive got one big problem with backing up. A while after i got the update, i tried to back it up (on Itunes 8.2 btw), i left it for two hours and it only got about 1/3 of the way. Tried the same thing after cancelling the backing up, left it up for 3 hours and still only 1/3 way there. Two days later before I went to bed i connected it, when i came back to it 10 hours later (Beforre leaving home) it only went 1/3 of the way!! Now i dont really want to restore it because before i tried to back it up, i purchased quite a few items through wifi, and it wont let me transfer my purchases, although it does let me sync items onto the ipod. I have also never jail broke my ipod, so if there is any fix let me know please!!
June 27th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
I have a problem with Safari on my phone after I updated it. It wont work at all, and has on several occasions caused my phone to crash completely. I cannot figure out what the problem is.
Should I restore the phone and then update it from my back up? I’ve already had to start all over again without any of my apps or anything once. I don’t want to do that again.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Well… nevermind. I synced the phone again and it seemed to fix the problem.
June 28th, 2009 at 10:00 am
The problem for me is copy/cut and paste. I can’t get the exact words I want to copy. It’s all over the place. For me, it’s very inexact.
June 28th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I updated my iPhone to 3.0 the day it came out. Everything seemed fine, but suddenly around half the songs on my iPod stopped playing. Well- it says they’re playing- but no sound is coming out. Yet my phone has sound for applications, email, texting, etc. I’ve no idea what to do.
June 28th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Ok ……. My cousin used to work for the devolpment dept at apple , he recently quit . I addressed alot of these issues to him because i am experiencing alot of the same ones you are . I was told there is a big difference in the 3.0 os in the 3g s and other iphones , the firmware for the 3g s has alot of stuff in it the the available upgrade does not ! This was done on purpose by apple to try and boost sales of the 3g s phones ! It makes the 3g phones look ” out of date “
June 28th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
“A lot” is two words, not one. And yes, I am the grammar police.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:10 am
The reason for not being able to force quit on the 3G is because the firmware is all tied together for all 3 generations of devices. I have the 3GS and it has voice control which is activated by holding home. That gets ported over to the 3G and all it does is make the force quit sequence useless and theoretically it isn’t there anymore, only support for voice control which isn’t supported on the 3G, only 3GS. Hope that helps.
June 29th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Alright, have many of the issues above along with the following post of a video with the most bizzare one..
My main screen zoomed in and will not un-zoom. even after i power down.. wtf..
June 30th, 2009 at 12:33 am
Has anyone had an issue with app icons switching up on each other? It has also persisted after deleting the app and reinstallation. Mail me if you have any clue as to how I might remedy this issue.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:04 am
I figured out the send button not working to bring up the keyboard to reply to text messages with the 3.0 update guys. You now have to click on the white bubble next to the send button like you are putting your cursor there, and then the keyboard comes up when replying to text messages….. Wish Apple would have mentioned this.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Anyone else having trouble watching videos outside of YouTube? My 3gs doesn’t want to for some reason.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:43 am

July 1st, 2009 at 8:25 am
DAVID STARR “I have 3 pop mail accounts and mobile me (with push) and don’t use fetch. Under the old OS, when you open “Mail” it checks all the accounts and populates with the number of messages. Now it only checks the mobile me account unless you open the individual account windows. Apple Tech says no one else has complained yet.”
Same issue. It drives me nuts. Hope they fix it. Have multi accounts and didn’t used to have to open all of them to see if you had email.

After upgrading to 3.0:
Joost no longer works.
Best Buys drop down menu definitely no longer works but I never used that feature.
Messed up music when iPhone is plugged into car radio.
iHOME alarm clock is no longer iPhone compatible.
Google Earth actually seems to work better.
Lost all old pictures.
Picasa 3 no longer synchs pictures but I can browse Picasa online.
Love search function on home page.

July 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
After re-synching twice 3G almost perfect. JVC car radio and iHome recognizes it again. Only video lost was JOOST. Upgrade took 9 hours but synchs normal now. Strongly suggest returning it to original status before upgrade. Overall I rate 3.0 as a worthwhile improvement
July 4th, 2009 at 12:10 am

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me!!! I had an iphon 3g for literally a year, and it got stolen off of me in broad daylight on the 2nd of July. However through insurance (thank god), I recieved a new phone and sim the following day… now the problems start… I synced the phone to itunes 8.2 and it said the iphone could not restore back up, as the software is too old (my old phone was 3.0 and the new one obviously 2.2.1). It then said I needed to set the phone up as a new iphone, which I did. However, after doing this and choosing to restore back up, it only gives me the option of restoring iphone to “Jahangeer’s iphone” and one restoring date, 10th april 09! How can that be when I only last synched and backed up my old iphone 3g a week before it was stolen?! I’m pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to solve the problem. Any ideas/help would extremely be appreciated!!!

The only problem that I’m having is that none of my apps that I have added work after my update
July 9th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Syncing does not remove it.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Have downloaded ver 3.0 and now all my top 25 paid and free apps are Japanese apps. Phone and itunes is set to Australia in settings. Have no idea how to fix this glitch…….
July 14th, 2009 at 2:48 am
My iphone 3g now updated to 3.0 – it now loses my home wifi connection and asks me to reenter the password for my network. Safari crashes when closing one window to goto another. I keep losing my signal although in a strong signal area and my phone has started saying NO SIM INSTALLED at times, so I have to reboot. all in all now not reliable so thinking of purchasing a second phone so I don’t lose customers when out and about.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
When listening to iPod if I send an SMS the songs jump and get stuck. The end call display doesn’t show up at times. Safari freezes. Applications don’t download.now my phone can’t handle any plugs other than iPhone official ear buds. If I use plugs for stereo or other headphones the songs stop and start and stop and start.
July 16th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
FIX FOUND!!! I have a 3.0 redsnow .7 & .8 hacked iPhone (2G) that was draining battery life before noon (fully charged @ 7am) I noticed that if I chose T-Mobile instead of Automatic for carrier, it would give me a warning every 5 min. I was also missing alot of calls that weren’t appearing on my call log. Had a similar problem with an old phone, went to T-Mobile, got a new SIM card for free and now the battery lasts longer than ever.

Updated to 3.0 yesterday on a first generation Iphone. Now I can no longer access work e-mail (grrrrr). It tries to download messages (unsuccessfully) but then reverts back to homescreen after a few seconds. Can anyone provide a fix? Thanks.

My iphone stopped receiving calls after upgrading to 3.0. Battery life is much shorter too. A friend at work also had the same problem. He reinstalled 3.0 without the carrier upgrade and seemed to fix the call issue. I called Optus and they got me to reset the network settings in general settings. They did the same at their end, now i am receiving calles again.

I have one problem about apps. I got an iPhone 2G and I updated to 3.0. So the problems that found out is that after I sync apps to my iPhone, the artwork of apps won’t change. It still remain the same. What can I do?

I saw some people are having the same problem as me. I updated to 3.0. I can send and recieve messages all right, but then I hit the home button and I come back to messages and all my history is gone. This problem started when I deleted all my messages, I already had some minor problems, but all this started happening since then. Any suggestions?

Heads up on 3.01… Just happened to plug my iPhone 32gb in iTunes this weekend and there was an update to be installed so I let it fly. Somewhere after installing/verifying error!. The process left my phone cratered with the flashing plug into iTunes graphic on screen. So I spent the hours waiting for iTunes to reinstall the bios & OS, restore the phone from backup and reinstall all apps. Then of course another hour plus for it to resync and copy back the ~24GB’s of music it erased.
This was my first Apple product ever (been a programmer 25 years) and I won’t soon trust them again…

Upgraded 3g phone to version 3 (then to 3.0.1) and find that the screen blanks out while in a call and doesn’t come back quick enough. If I need to get the the keyboard to “press 1 for…” or even to hang up.

My issues is that while on a call, my phone will not allow me to disconnect. The screen is black and doesn’t come back on to allow me to hit the cancel call “button”.
