Rumor: Third Generation iPhone 2,1 to be Called iPhone Video?!

We’ve gone round and round on this before. I think Dieter and I may have mentioned this as one of a hundred guesses on the last Phone different podcast, but discounted it as being, like iPhone Extreme, something that fits into Apple’s brand but doesn’t really feel like a direction Apple would go.
TUAW was tipped to it being — briefly — on the AT&T website, however, so we have to consider it, don’t we? (If the screen cap is for real).
Once upon a time Steve Jobs said no one wants to watch video on a tiny screen. Then Apple released the iPod video. So, there is precedent. Also, Apple named the iPhone 3G after its “killer” feature — access to a faster cell network. So, if Apple considers video shooting, editing, and sharing to the the third generation’s “killer” feature, iPhone video would certainly throw the spotlight on it (better than iPhone Compass, at least!)
That’s the same thinking that was behind my betting the farm on iPhone HD last October. While Apple doesn’t seem eager — yet! — to give me my 480×800 screen resolution, Microsoft has jumped on the moniker with Zune HD via its support for HD Radio and 720p dock-enabled output. If Apple includes new AV cables that let the newer, faster, more powerful CPU, RAM, and GPU push 720p as well, and HD is now off the table thanks to Microsoft’s accelerated announcement last week, could iPhone video be a similar (if not quite as sexy) option?
What do you think?

If Video is the main selling point for the new iPhone then the name “iPhone Video”, is highly propable. Even if the main selling point is the video conferencing in 3G areas and on WiFi, then it is still propable for the name.

I like it. Simple yet meaningful. Right up Apple’s alley.

Well as you all know by now (iPhone) Video killed the radio star (Zune HD)
Jokes aside, as I wrote on a previous reply: iPhone AV would sound so much more elegant.

eh. I don’t like it too much. I didn’t like the new back of the 3G when the image leaked but my mind changed. Maybe my mind will change on this as well.
I think a lot of people would automatically be reminded of the iPod Video. I could imagine people saying. ” But the iPhone could already play videos “
Like with last years confusion with 3G and 3GB, people are likely to be confused again. I just like ” iPhone “.

I agree with OmariJames. Iphone Video is not a great name because it’s confusing. People are used to the Ipod Video because its main feature was the ability to play video. A friend of mine got an 80GB ipod classic as a gift and was angry because she thought it couldn’t play videos. Iphone 3G was a good name but not iphone video. Just “iphone” is a good enough name.

@OmariJames
After Apple’s customary media blitz everyone will know that the Video means video capture, edit and share.

What is Zune?
June 4th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
This is starting to get exciting, I think I might want a new one, too bad I can’t afford it right now, hmmm….what can I sell on ebay
June 4th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
No, Apple, don’t do this…
June 4th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
too much suspense
June 4th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
It would be really cool if you could rent a movie (over wifi of course) on your iPhone and output it via HDMI to the TV.

@Juanlu “Well as you all know by now (iPhone) Video killed the radio star (Zune HD)”
You can’t really compare phones to MP3 players, can you?
June 4th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Guys. Read the comments of that article on TUAW. That can easily be made using an editor. One of the posters even makes an “iphone sandwich” option in the dropdown to prove it. I’m sure this is fake.
June 4th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I agree with Joe Mcg. This can easily be an edit.
June 4th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Ehh. It’s ok. Confusing, and I still think apple will surprise us with an HD screen:) 720p (or 480 I guess…) (
) would be EXCELLENT for gaming (with 512mb or a gig even of RAM of course…).
June 4th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Yup. Edit.
Look at the Capital Letter P in each place. One of them does not look like the other.

Am I the only one that wonders why all of these screen shots are ALWAYS taken with a external camera (cell phone or digital camera). Everyone knows theres a “Print Screen” button on the keyboard. How much easier (and clearer for that matter) would it be to just hit that button, open up paint, paste, and save. Everytime I see one of these it only makes me think of one thing… Fake.
But having said that (since that was really more talking about all of the other ones) I could see it being called the iPhone Video. But only if iChat was involved.
June 5th, 2009 at 4:15 am
You’re all dumb, it’s not going to be called the iPhone video if they even have a new one. They’d more likely call it the iPhone “jokes on you here is another awsome device that lasts half a day if you are lucky cause the battery sucks”
June 5th, 2009 at 5:38 am
Er, I said this like a month ago, on this blog
June 5th, 2009 at 7:43 am
jimi the only reason u all complain about battery is cause apple are the first to give us a phone we want to use ALL THE TIME. use ur iphone like u used to use any other phone & i bet u dont have batteru issues. my iphones battery is fine. sure it gets low but thats cause i use it 16 hours a day ( the other 8 i sleep)
June 5th, 2009 at 10:28 am
@Duke:
The iPhone was the first phone that was meant to be used all the time, therefore it should have a battery that was designed for use all the time.
By the way, your message looks like it was typed on a Razr.
June 5th, 2009 at 10:48 am
What a **** name. We already have video! We watch YouTube and movies all the time. For those that are jailbroken, video recording with cycorder has been common place. introduce adobe and that would make things interesting. Yet still iPhone video would make the device sound years behind compared to simple mobiles.
As others have said previously, the president for apple was set with the notebooks. It is more likely for apple to walk down a road everyone knows, especially as advertising is concerned. The iPhone pro or the iPhone air are likely choices, as everyone associates theses with apple, just as they use the “I” in all there computers.

i half expect them to say something like “Available in july” but at least I’ll finally know! but thanks for the reality check icebike
June 5th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
@ Jimi
Look man, you need to get a life. You’re at the iPhone Blog. What do you expect to be going on here? If you really want a meaningful conversation about the battery life, don’t phrase your question like a jerk. If you just wanna troll try the Engadget comments.
Seriously. You’re wasting your time and our time.
June 5th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
no I’m pointing out apple making a good product and then leaving it with a horrible battery and no mms which my 5 year old phone does fine and we get excited for something the first iPhone should have done
June 10th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
its called the iphone 3g S unluck – S stands for speed
