How-To: Create an iTunes App Store account without a credit card
Apple has helpfully created a knowledge base article describing the process for creating an App Store account sans credit card.
The process involves making sure you’re not already logged in with another account, then choosing App Store from the menu, downloading a free app, choosing “none” for the payment type, and responding to the confirmation menu.
While this might also work for people stuck in countries where antiquated licensing agreements prevent apps from being available (like Skype in Canada! Ahem!) Apple probably intends it for users in the US without a credit card, not for cross-border hopper-shoppers. Right?

If I do this, is it difficult to flip back to my “home” (Canadian) app store account? Will my phone get confused?

Unlike media/music/movies, I don’t believe the iPhone cares how many accounts you sync Apps from. (Likely Apple doesn’t have to care about paranoid, customer hating Big Media and so allows relatively fair use for apps).

The no card account option has always been available in various countries in order to facilitate free song promotions (Pepsi, Coke, etc). Consumers received a voucher or code for a free song. In order to use the voucher/code you needed an account. Since the contests/promotions were legally open to any consumer, they had to have a method of allowing non card holders to use participate. Simple as that.

skype does work in canada. u can download skype from it’s website. it just lets you do person to person chat, not phone calls right?

You need to use Mozilla browser as default IE7 nor IE8 support the free feature go figure

I just open Itunes and went to edit under Creditcard.. then pick none and hit done..
