iPhone 3G to Support MMS, Original iPhone Won’t

Whew! The feature announcements in the iPhone 3.0 event came fast and furious. One of the most-wanted features, MMS, will be supported when 3.0 is released to consumer this summer. That’s the good news. The bad news: Apple claims that the radio on the original iPhone 2G can’t support MMS, so that feature will not make it to 1st gen iPhones.

MMS on the iPhone 3G looks to be almost full-featured. You will be able to send and receive photos, audio, vCard (contact cards), and ‘location.’ One thing that won’t be supported on MMS: Video. The iPhone 3G still can’t record video and therefore, one assumes, receiving video MMS will be difficult.

Still – it’s lovely to see the iPhone finally support a feature that’s common not only on other smartphones, but on nearly every feature phone made. iPhone 3.0 can’t come soon enough!

  1. Jeffdc5 Says:

now I get to keep my iphone it was going on ebay soon

  2. llofte Says:

I’m very happy about this! I was always baffled why Apple never included it in the first place.

Now I just laugh at all those people out there (especially on iPhone forums on apple.com) who SWORE that Apple would NEVER come as low as include such ancient horrible technology into their elite phone.

  3. jeffdc5 Says:

They included it like the g1 does just looks better. I see they took many things that the jailbreak guys worked for

  4. Blake 2 Says:

Maybe this will shut all those up who said “If Apple is smart, they’ll never support MMS because it’s dead technology.” Yes sending pics through email is nice, but I don’t have an email address for all of my contacts. Thank you for being wrong.

  5. jeffdc5 Says:

    No need to jailbreak anymore

  6. Omari James Says:

That’s GREAT ! I don’t mind video via MMS, they will just email it to me from their phone as a MMS and if it’s in QT I can still view it.

  7. Terry Says:

You still could JB for themes and background processing.

  8. Jeffdc5 Says:

i got tired of themes slowing my phone down background processing is nice i will miss that but i’m tired of playing cat and mouse waiting for a new jailbreak every time apple drops a firmware

  9. spook† Says:

curios…are there any jailbreak apps that support mms video sending and receiving?

  10. striatic Says:

i wonder if this is at all a case of throwing a bone to the carriers.

apple’s new push notification service should cannibalize SMS sales, by switching people over to IM – by enabling MMS, it gives the carriers something to work with in terms of selling messaging plans.

  11. Omari James Says:

Yes. iPhone sans MMS was annoying. A lot of people still use MMS, maybe when the mobile market becomes Full smart/feature phones they will eliminate MMS but for now it’s still useful.

  12. Drew Says:

JeffDC and Spook, both good points. I got rid of themes as well because it did slow the iPhone down. There are many who say it doesnt, while you look at the processes it’s running and free memory, IT DOES… I am sure we could still use swirly to send MMS’s. I just dont use MMS’s so it doesnt hurt me to much. (iPhone 2G Here). The only thing I see that might hurt is the P2P Bluetooth feature not being supported. Ohh well, as long as we have copy and paste and Push. I AM ALL GOOD.

  13. Ben Says:

The 1st gen radio doesn’t support MMS? BS. If that’s the case why has SwirlyMMS been doing it since 1.1.4?

  14. bpa Says:

Still no Tasks or To Do list. WHY??

  15. Rajiv Says:

    Bring on Cydia 3.0!

  16. Ana Says:

I will for sure stay JB, I can’t live without McCleaner(reason I JB) or cycorder(a must). If something similar to McCleaner enters the app store I would perhaps think about it.

  17. will Says:

The whole mms not working on the 2g is a load of bs. They just want to give preimum service to their newer products so people will give them more money. I imagine it will be a neutered for of mms anyway. I am on a family plan with 3 iphones , 2 are 3g and one is 2g all have swirly mms on att with the family messaging plan. Where i see this going is swirly becoming even better and supporting video unlike the 3.0 update. And any way the jailbreak community will come up with a way to get the mms on the 2g like the packages on cydia that had google street view.

  18. Bill Taroli Says:

Well, I’m glad for the folks who really craved MMS. I just wonder what things we /didn’t/ get in 3.0 because of this. :D

  19. icebike Says:

@Will: I agree. there hasn’t been a cell chipset for GSM that did not uspport MMS for years and years. If you can do SMS you can do MMS because they use the same radio and the same bandwidth.

@Bill: I don’t thing we are missing anything by virture getting MMS, because mms is cut and dried, and already abailable in jailbreak.

  20. Nick Says:

Why no mms for 2g. The vcard excuse is bull. Thanks alot apple for letting down customers from the start. 

  21. Mike Says:

Lol. Now that u got ur mms. Bend over and take from at&t. Your getting charged for this service. What? u expected free? Ill stick to email.

  22. gio Says:

hi, i downloaded the 3.0 software since i am in the iphone dev program. anybody nows how can i set up my iphone to actually send mms with att? it keeps giving me errors, i guess it is because att. i hate att! for instance, i also have a blackberry and i wanted both plans on my number (iphone data + bb data) for att this is not possible, gotta have 2 lines! crazy! thanks

  23. ZaVaZ Says:

@gio No, The MMS feature is being blocked at the end ATT. I have done everything I can to get MMS on my iPhone. SwirlyMMS will tell you that you have a MMS but will not Pull the info to the Device since ATT is blocking it. This is ATT fault. Apple and ATT need to get together and Unblock it

  24. Pedro Says:

Nicely said Ben i sooo agree man that IS BS!!! if not then ill have to wait till a newer iphone than the 3G…. I dont want to buy a 3G and then a few months later a newer one comes out…. All these other features are REALLY cool though

  25. Joe Says:

Yeah well see.. the i phone can do video.. infact it takes quite nice video. Apple should just balls up and admit it and not be lame about it. Im sure their next iphone will be called the iphone video. They are just waiting to make more money. @ zavaz Yeah at&t is the one huge thing holding apple back. At&T is going down hill fast and they need everything they can get from apple. What amkes me a little stupified is the fact that apple allopws them to release so called iphone killing devices that are marketed as a touch screen everyone can afford. (LG Vu)Once at&t gets off their high horse and improves their infrastructure insterad of blaming the customer for doing too much, the iphone will always be capped and not beable to to be used to its full potential. I know i have typos but im late for work.

  26. Justn Says:

This sucks!!! I have had the iphone since day 1. First, I get screwed when they drop the price, now, I have been waiting for MMS and they finally bring it out….but oh wait…only on the 3G…..that is ****!! I guess I will have to jailbreak again….I should have kept my Palm or my Razr for a while longer if I knew they where going to pull this….any one want to buy a 2G iphone in good shape….??

  27. Danette Says:

I just have to be the voice of reason here..yes it sucks that MMS is not on the 2G..but seriously what company provides HUGE free updates that makes your phone do everything the new ones do for free? It’s just bad business. Yes it sucks for the 2G users..But its common sense that if something new and amazing comes out you pay for it (in this case getting a 3g) or suck it up with the 2g or jailbreak it. When you purchased the 2g you were fully aware of no MMS..and the possibility that it may not ever work on it. So the product that apple sold you did what it advertised.. so chill.

  28. Sauuuce Says:

    Danette,

It’s called GPS. Free motorola phones can do mms. The reason to upgrade to 3g is gps.

  29. cody Says:

well im ready to get a iphone 3g, when i get my tax return stuff in a week hopefully, i was let down when i heard that it didnt have mms, cuz i love to send lots of pics, im in high demand, lol. well im glad they are coming out with this update and the price drops, cuz i will be new to at&t and the iphone, im a us cellular customer for the past 2 years, and i have the lg touch, which totally sucks. so im looking forward to this and the update, i am just suprised that as great as the iphone 3g is said to be, that it didnt have something as simple as having the ability to send a pic to somebodys PHONE, and not have to hassle with email, cuz not everyone has email, or uses it for pics :P

  30. Slappy Says:

Still pathetic that the original $600 iphone will never be able to send MMS, however, free phones from service providers do this no problem. Can’t wait for my 2 year contract to be up so I can get a fully functional phone for much less initially and monthly.

  31. No!!! Says:
    1. MMS working
    2. Video recorder
    3. Less restriction from apple
    4. I wanna draw my own route in maps
    5. I want GPS to show and store my co-ordinates, drop pin and bookmarks are cool but not enough.
    6. I want a barcode reader on my phone… Pretty much everything has a barcode on it, right?
    7. I want my iPhone to buzz when another iPhone is near (toggle on and off ofcourse)
    8. I want voice activation everything… So cool, tell ur phone to dial a number from across the room and the phone replies “Dialing (name)”. Or like “skip track”
  32. john Says:

Hey people iphone 2g is Exactly the same as the iphone 3g ,,,people give it a thought they look exactly the same..the minor differences mean nothing ive had both of them the iphones 3g and 2g .3G provider doesnt make a difference ive always had almost perfect service on my iphone 2g.u can also get all the software updates on iphone 2g ,and the software looks exactly the same ..yes there are a few things the iphone 2g cant do on the new 3.0 software like mms but as u can see other people that have just stated on this website that mms can be used on iphone 2g ,so apple gave another lode of bullshit.and the bluetooth thing (only sterio)my 2G phone has THAT.what the hell!!!!MAYBE APPLE SHOULD BRING OUT REAL BLUETOOTH NOT CARAPPY STERIO!!!

  33. Logan Says:

Hey i have an iphone 3G, so will i be able to just download the new software wen it comes out, or will i have to buy a new iphone?

  34. Joe Says:

I have a jail broken 3g, if I download the 3.0 update will my phone be jailed again or unjailbroken? Thanks

  35. Brett Says:

Perhaps AT&T will allow customers who are still using a 2G iPhone to upgrade to the new device “when it comes out” at the subsidized price, like they did when the 3G came out… and if they do??? i’ll be upgrading right away. no mms on teh 2G… what total horseshxt.

  36. Joel Says:

Sorry Mike, AT&T won’t be charging you for mms. It’s already included I’m the unlimited messaging plan. And with the iPhone data plan, you aren’t charged to download the picture. Nice excuse. ATT also will let any oroginal iPhone customer upgrade to the 3g t the 199 price.

  37. Jacob Says:

I think it is total bs that the “radio” on the original iPhone is unable to send/receive MMS. I have a hacked iPhone with an app called Swirly MMS and it sends and receives MMS messages perfectly fine through the phone service, not the internet.

Also I dont understand why they are having so much trouble with recording/playing video. I also have a third party app (available through Cydia) called cycorder that allows me to record video and playback recorded video.

  38. Cameron Says:

    @Joe

Your phone will be Jailed again.

  39. Anonymus Says:

Cant Take Video on my iphone unless i buy the new 3g S…i feel a Jailbreak comin on….at least there i can take video…

  40. Roger Says:

Just DL’d 3.0 no Free video recording or Free MMS available …just voice memos and forwarding messages …

  41. Lucy Says:

Just downloaded 3.0 and the MMS does not work! I even asked in the phone shop 2 days ago and the guy assured me just plug it into iTunes, download and away you go!! We’ve all been deceived, it’s clearly not ready to work yet!

  42. Brian Says:

The 3.0 software allows for mms on the iphone 3G, however U.S based atat will not be implementing a software patch until later this summer. The 3.0 software for other cell providers will currently give them mms and tethering.

  43. Jish Says:

same with lucy, i have a 3g and the mms does not work

  44. Steven Says:

@Danette What in the World is new and amazing about Tethering and MMS!!! By the way there is nothing HUGE about this update, the only thing that’s HUGE is my disappointment about Apple ;) There is absolutely no reason that MMS won’t work on 2G same for Tethering, Swirly MMS and iPhone-Modem does work on 2G. So there’s no way i’ll chill.

  45. ozzy Says:

i think the MMS wont be working until late this summer

  46. bob Says:

So no mms still…att and apple are thieves at best…what a joke of an update.

  47. fteter Says:

Never have done the JB thing with my 2G iPhone, but the poor support for the 2G phones in the 3.0 release has convinced me to take the plunge now.

  48. RODNEY WILSON Says:

3.0 has my 2g iPhone freezing like never before!!!! I was looking for to this update because I thought would be good for my 2g. But I’m now going to have to consider buying the 3gs! it’s obvious apple is forcing 2g iPhone owners to upgrade!!!

  49. Marrat Says:

Looks like there is no support for Stereo Bluetooth on the Ver 1 Iphones. Anyone out there get that working? If not, then this is another fine example of the Apple marketing strategy. Force your existing customers to buy what’s new by not supporting the old. Go Apple!

  50. Dity Says:

I’ve been sending mms with old iphone through email, so it hasn’t been a big deal for me. The 3.0 software has messed up my 2g a little bit though, it runs slower. it was a forced update too, because the EDGE network stopped working until I upgraded. I think forcing me to buy the new 3gs is working XD, but I’d rather have a metal iphone then a plastic one :(

  51. PHACE Says:

Apple it’s riping people off with this new iPhone it’s really messed up the video recording is not on 2g iPhone. On the other hand I know people that have a 2g iPhone like myself, that has video recording since the 2g iPhone has been out. Tell me why is this so and is apple just trying to make more money off its new iPhone 3gs. Be aware people it’s possible to have video recording on 2g. Don’t let apple get away with riping you off.

  52. wakuwaku Says:

iPhone 2G OS 3.0 MMS Support, with persistent MMS APN settings. http://www.iphone-tips-tricks.com/2009/07/iphone-tips-how-to-activate-mms-on.html

  53. rythm Says:

iphone-tips-tricks did not work for me. there are so many problems with the message.app. isn’t this funny? mms is an absolutely stupid feature that any 10$ phone has, but the ipone 2G does not.

apple should think about this. the palm pre is in the wild aswell…

anyway: i had some of the problems with teh activatemms2g app like no camera symbol, settings not savde or even no cellular network menu at all

    this worked: http://news.metaparadigma.de/?p=2404

  54. dyl-rod Says:

how do i get mms on my iphone 3g with 3.0 firmware i hear att still doesnt suport it??

  55. ManNTouch Says:

  58. Sinister1 Says:

1st Gen i Phone users need not to worry, there is Send MMS from ifind2.com. It works with no need to jail-break or any stupid hacking or third party apps like Cydia. It also works with all other i Phones and now even works with Roger if you are in Canada. This is not B.S. and I’m not spamming because I am not making any money from this and it is not my app. I’m sharing it with you guys cause I have an old 1st Gen i Phone and after going thru like 5 different apps, this is the only one that works and is easy to use. check out the demo vid: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/3161786/mmsifind2com/

  59. chowder9630 Says:

of course original iphone users get screwed once again with mms can’t run on 2g network. all the phones out there stil run off and switch back and fourth form 2g to 3g if 3g is not available which still is not a big area around me. so pretty much they are too freaking lazy to adapt the software to 2g. im sure they will find some way to screw 3g and 3gs somehow like making you pay for mms lol. apple is great but att sucks and always will can’t wait till that contract is over maybe will get real cell service

  60. JK Says:

What is this swirly mms. I unfortunately am in the 2g iPhone family, so I cant send or receive mms messages. Not toooooooo apple application savvy, any suggestions?

  61. Shane Says:

Am I the only one that can’t SEND a pic?? When the other person receives a pic I send it still sends the link for them to log in to view it.

  62. Darrel Isis Says:

You GUYS Are terrible analysts’. Apple are very clever in the business industry controlling your every thought and desire. Like Japan, they are reusing an Idea already present an making it somewhat better… They want to lack the phones capabilities in order for you to continue to buy their product every so often they come out with a new one. A 10G network is already in the making and we are here in America contemplating about 3G? They are even smart enough as to let you choose, create your own programs and then selling it. How smart is that? They are making so much money meanwhile you did the work… Wake up people, Apple needs to work as hard as their competitors… Pretty soon, it wont be fair to us when they have all your personal informations on cellphones transmitted to reviewers pointing a gun at your head when they want to… Wake up
