Apple iPhone 3.0 Massive News Roundup!

So Apple previewed iPhone OS 3.0 today, and made the first beta available for developers, but it won’t be released for us users until “summer” 2009 (we’re guessing June or July). No new hardware was announced (we’re guessing WWDC in June for that too!), but boy-oh-boy were there a lot of software announcements. Here’s a roundup of posts we have up thus far. Yes, it’s been quite a day for the iPhone, for TiPb, and for our awesome community — thanks everyone!

Make sure you hit up TiPb’s iPhone Forums as well, we have tons of great threads, and even more amazing community members to talk iPhone 3.0 with… while we all wait breathlessly for “summer”

If I pay $100. Can I download the 3.0 software and install it on the iPhone?

  2. Maniacfive Says:

you’ll get it free if you’re an iphone customer. its only iPod Touches that have to pay the $10 for the update

  3. KORG Says:

Typo, I meant now? Not in the summer time.

Meaning if pay $100 developer fee, can I install the new 3.0 OS software my iPhone now.

  4. frog Says:

    So Palm is dead, yeh?

  5. Drew Says:

Ok just a question since I’m a little lost on some things.

    1. What’s the difference between background and push notification?

Like for Pandora, would I be able to play it while txting someone or what?

  6. Mashono Says:

All I can say is wow! Can’t wait until summer now. Cut, copy and past, mms, push. 3.0 is going to be amazing.

  7. icebike Says:

@Drew: Background means the app is idling in the background waiting (presumably with a TCP connection open) for something to arrive over the net.

Push notification means that SOMETHING is idling (probably part of the iPhone OS) and listening for some even destined for one or more of the apps installed.

When one arrives, the OS launches that application and hands it the notification event, or more likely just tells that app to “Call Home” to figure out what it is supposed to do.

Background requires all the apps to be running, chewing up cycles and memory.

(Only Apple apps can run in the background (mail). You can leave any given app running in the foreground when you sleep the phone (but only one app).

My big concern is this Push notification is going to require a Mobile Me account, I hope I’m wrong.

  8. Fassy Says:

@Dave Specifically to your example, push notification would not allow you to text while listening to Pandora, while background processes would. As a rule of thumb, if what you want involves your iPhone waiting to be told something by somebody/something else, push can help. If you need your phone actively to do 2 or more things at once, you need background processes.

Can I just say, as a bit of constructice critiscm, your coverage was real good today, each blog post was informative… now I have had time to read them. but earlier I didnt, along with this post, I could’ve done with a blog post listing the changes in 3.0, clearly labelled and bullet pointed and the like for those short on time

Yee gods! i had to go to engadget for said quick info. Engadget! i feel dirty.

  10. Drew Says:

Thanks for the clarification! Background would be nice but again, that 80% battery being eaten up is none too appealing.

I think this was a pretty solid day. I was definitely surprised by some announcements and very happy at them. The landscape mode should be great. Too often I’ve dreaded writing txts or emails on the phone. Sending more than one pic in an email should be great. Turn by Turn I don’t really find appealing since I think the current map/direction set up is just fine. The worst feature is this “pay 3 dollars for more bricks in Topple” or w/e it’s going to go to. But other than that, a pretty solid day.

    @KORG:

Yes, if you pay $99 and are accepted into the developer program, you can get the 3.0 BETA now (not final release, pre-release beta software).

  13. frog Says:

I’m also suspecting push notifications will require MobileMe. I have it, so no big issue – but many don’t.

  14. MrJuicee Says:

Apple is still too far behind the curve. Everything they announced has been on other devices for years. Still no video…….yawn.

  15. lilngineer Says:

I have 2 different iPod stereos (Pioneer in car, fusion in boat) that do not work with 3.0 beta.

They will not even communicate with the iPhone. Just an early FYI!

  16. Andrew Says:

Would you be able to post anything about the new language capabilities that were hinted at during the presentation? I’d like to know what keyboard improvements they’ve made and what new languages they’ve added.

    Thanks!

  17. Jordan Says:

You guys should point out that youtube doesn’t work in 3.0 at all. http://jordanbalagot.com/blog/2009/03/18/iphone-os-30-first-look/

  18. lilngineer Says:

YouTube works if it’s setup as a new phone. The problem is with restoring a backup.

Also, I got the stereos to communicate somehow. Must have been locked up.

  19. david Says:

    i love my storm.

  20. BBuser Says:

My storm can do all that ****, lol.

  21. BBuser Says:

You have to pay $100 for a Beta OS. LOl, boy them people at apple are really sticking it to you. Don’t you see they are just trying to make money off of all you suckers. BB is serving up some applesauce, care to dine in. Loving my storm.

  22. Moep Says:

@This was a developer conference. What they offer for download is not a public beta, it’s for developers only. You become a registered developer by paying $99. So, all it means is: Developers can download this beta for free.

  23. psionara Says:

Notes sync will be nice but can I change that aweful notes font?

How about tasks sync, anyone found that?

  24. Carlos Says:
