Speculation Alert: Does This Mean March 24 Will be iPhone 3.0 Beta? iTablet? What?!

Today Apple dropped new Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro desktops, and Airport Extreme, and Time Capsule routers. Previously, we’d heard rumors about Apple waiting and holding one of their Special Events on March 24th, a “Spotlight Turns to Desktops” to bookend last fall’s “Spotlight Turns to Laptops” event. But none of today’s releases were as new or event-worthy as the unibody MacBooks announced last year, were they?
So, if Apple really is having a March 24th event — and it’s not just some interfanboynet make believe — what’s left for them to announce?
Well, March 2008 was the iPhone SDK Roadmap Event, where Apple began the process that ultimately led us to iPhone OS 2.0 and the App Store.
Could March 2009 give us a similar peek into the beginning of a beta process for iPhone OS 3.0? Could it show off an App Store-level complication on the order of an iPhone HD or iTablet, requiring the months before WWDC and an eventual summer release be spent testing new resolutions or screen sizes, or other hardware changes bound for the iPhone 2,1 model?
As stated explicitly in the title, pure and abject speculation at this point, but Apple does seem to like product cycles and symmetry…
What do you think?

If an iTablet won’t run desktop applications (as is speculated), then what’s the point?

Here we go again, more speculation, its great isn’t it, iPhone HD with copy and paste and background running applications, that will do for me

@j
I completely agree. There’d be no point to an iPhone HD unless they made the phone bigger. I’d be pissed if that was the next release. What I see coming in a future release, not necessarily the next, is an iPhone that let’s you manage files like you would on a desktop, without having to use an app.

I think March 24th being about the iPhone is reasonable. Apple doesn’t want the FCC announcing new products for them, they would need a several month lead time of announcing new iPhone hardware before it’s approval and certification documents start showing up at the FCC for the public to see.

I think that a working version of flash will be anounced and that is all.

I think Rene is on to something!
Think about it. No more macworld. People got the scope with the mac mini before today(inside leaking for huge $$$). In way it forces Apple to release new product in this new manner. In way they have change product releases to combat leaks within the company, marketing at it’s best. We are all aware when they stop restocking product, when newer ones in the truck around the corner.
Bring on 1ghz iPhone HD WIDESREEN!

Sorry for the poor grammer, I blame the iPhone’s small screen and my meat hooks, my new MBP17 is backing up from my external HD:0)

A tablet would be cool, but I don’t see much of a market for it.
I’d rather not see a HD iPhone, because it would likely cancel out any battery improvements – which is currently the iPhones biggest problem in my opinion.

How about a better detachable battery ( EU Law now ), higher resolution resolution for those lovely images you’ll create with it’s 5MP camera and full ‘proper’ connectivity/functionality with service providers that would make me happy….(ier).

I was thinking it might be about snow leopard because of all the talk of a 1st half of ‘09 release. Looking into it more it now seems like it’s going to be pushed back till the 2nd half of ‘09?

Apple TV?

I’m betting on new iphone+3.0 software upgrade… as much as iPhone is a great phone other company’s are going to start stepping up to the plate more and more. Apple won’t want to lose ground and to stay ahead they need to step up to the plate.

my insider at apple sad it would be a little less than HD, but its going to have really good resolution. they will be getting more news in the next couple days. they are definitely planning something for the 24th though!

They may also be announcing a more affordable version of the iphone – makes sense with annual projections and the economy.
March 4th, 2009 at 2:41 am
Well I thought it would be about desktops. But that’s out of the picture now. Wouldn’t be iPods. Doesn’t leave a while lot else really.

My prediction for the new iPhone: the iPhone Video. It will be video-conference capable and will include MMS. Trust me.
March 4th, 2009 at 7:10 am
I think it will be all about software. iPhone 3.0 OS and Snow Leopard!
March 5th, 2009 at 2:48 am
I think there will be an iPhone 3G 32gb announced as well as new iPhone software. I think the “new” iPhone will be announced in June/July.
